Putting God First | Poniendo a Dios primero

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” 

We must not forget to put first things first. Last week we talked about putting God first in our financial priorities. The same thing is true of our time. One of the obstacles to generous financial giving to the church is our level of personal investment in the church. If it’s not that important to us, we’re not going to give a lot of ourselves to it. But if we volunteer for more parish programs, whether they be the choir, the parish council, the parent-teacher organization, one of our bible-study groups, or any of the many other parish groups and ministries, we’re probably (hopefully) going to want to be more generous to things to which we give more time. As Jesus told us, “Where your treasure is, there your heart is also.” 

Our relationship with God, Jesus teaches Martha and Mary, is not just the number one thing, but the only thing. Because it is the one thing that determines our eternity. We are taught to love God first because it teaches us how to love everything else through our love for God; in the right way, to the right measure. That’s why it works the same with giving, which is a dimension of our love. We give to God first, and it teaches us how to give to everything else, in the right way, to the right measure. 

It's not because God is greedy for our love or our money. It’s not what he wants from you, it’s that he wants you. And he knows that the way for you to freely choose to give yourself to him is to have you invested in your relationship with him. Treasure and heart. Because it is through him that we can do all things of any spiritual value. “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” And he wants you to enjoy superabundant fruit. But first he needs to convert your heart into his heart. Then you can receive all he wants to give you. “By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

Estimadas Familias y Amigos de la parroquia St. Francisco Xavier,

“Yo soy la vid verdadera, y mi Padre es el viñador. Al sarmiento que no da fruto en mí, él que lo arranca, y al que le da fruto, lo poda para que dé más fruto”.

No debemos olvidarnos que lo primero es lo primero. La semana pasada hablamos de poner a Dios primero en nuestras prioridades financieras. Lo mismo ocurre con nuestro tiempo. Uno de los obstáculos para dar generosamente a la iglesia es nuestro nivel de inversión personal en la iglesia. Si no es tan importante para nosotros, no le vamos a dar mucho de nosotros. Pero si nos ofrecemos como voluntarios para más programas parroquiales, por ejemplo, el coro, el consejo parroquial, la organización de padres y maestros, uno de nuestros grupos de estudio bíblico o cualquiera de los muchos otros grupos y ministerios parroquiales, probablemente (esperanzadamente ) vamos a querer ser más generosos con las cosas a las que dedicamos más tiempo. Como nos dijo Jesús: “Donde está tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón.”.

Nuestra relación con Dios, Jesús les enseña a Marta y María, no es sólo lo número uno, sino lo único. Porque es lo único que determina nuestra eternidad. Se nos enseña a amar a Dios primero que todo, porque nos enseña cómo amar todo lo demás a través de nuestro amor a Dios; de la manera correcta, en la medida correcta. Por eso funciona igual con el dar, que es una dimensión de nuestro amor. Le damos a Dios primero y eso nos enseña cómo dar a todo lo demás, de la manera correcta y en la medida correcta.

No es porque Dios esté codicioso de nuestro amor o nuestro dinero. No es lo que él quiere de ti, es que él te quiere a ti. Y él sabe que la manera de que elijas libremente entregarte a él es invirtiendo en tu relación con él. Tesoro y corazón. Porque es a través de él que podemos hacer todas las cosas de cualquier valor espiritual. “El que permanece en mí, y yo en él, da mucho fruto, porque separados de mí, nada pueden hacer.”. Y quiere que disfrutes de frutos sobreabundantes. Pero primero necesitan convertir sus corazones en el corazón de Él. Entonces podrán recibir todo lo que él les quiere dar. “La gloria de mi Padre consiste en que ustedes den fruto abundante, y así sean mis discípulos”.
