Matrimony

Now, not with lust, but with fidelity I take this kinswoman as my wife.
Send down your mercy on me and on her, and grant that we may grow old together.
- Tobit 8:7

Congratulations!

Congratulations on your engagement! We are most excited and honored to support you in your preparation for this life-long commitment in Christ’s Church.

As part of your engagement, the Church requires marriage preparation. We want you to be well-prepared for this extraordinary decision and commitment you are making: a life-long commitment to each other through vows before God. We hope that this preparation helps you appreciate the beauty of getting married in the Catholic Church - a gift of receiving abundant graces to live a joyful life together. We also hope that, through this process, you learn more about each other and yourselves before you get married. University studies suggest couples who engage in marriage preparation have a significantly lower risk of divorce than couples who do not (e.g. Stanley, “Premarital Education,” 2006).

On this page are resources and requirements in order to complete marriage preparation at St. Francis Xavier and in the Diocese of Harrisburg. Your first move should be to meet with a priest.

Please fill out the form below in order to get in touch with a priest to schedule a meeting.

During Marriage Preparation you can expect:

  1. To complete a Pre-Marital Questionnaire completed with the priest.

  2. To complete a FOCCUS questionnaire completed with a mentor couple, who will walk with you as you prepare for marriage (and during your marriage!).

  3. To Attend a Marriage Prep Retreat:

    1. Engaged Encounter Weekend: See the 2023 Brochure HERE.

    2. God's Plan for Love: A Saturday conference.
To see the upcoming scheduled events for Engaged Encounter or God’s Plan, click HERE.

  4. To receive resources about Natural Family Planning. Visit our NFP page and contact St. Francis Xavier’s Natural Family Planning Parish Ambassadors, Phil and Becca Dickerson for NFP resources, methods, and questions.

  5. To meet with Cindie Kane about the readings, hymns, etc. for the liturgy.

  6. To Meet with the Priest about the sacrament of marriage itself: this meeting is what you might call a 'catechetical instruction' on the sacrament.
