Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Parish! We’re glad you’re here!
Our parish was founded in 1831, and incredibly, St. John Neumann blessed the cornerstone of our historic church on West High Street in 1852 and returned on July 31, 1853, to dedicate it. For nearly two centuries, we have literally and figuratively undertaken Pope Francis’ calling for the Church to serve as a field hospital to those in need. Our Historic Church served as a field hospital in the months following the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. Also, during the Spanish Influenza Epidemic in September 1918, our parish school and parish hall—-formerly located next to the Historic Church on High Street—-served our United States Army as a hospital. The troops that we cared for were under the command of, at that time, Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower. By the grace of God, we have served our country’s troops as a hospital twice in our history.
We have continued to welcome, minister to, and provide care and support, as well educate the residents of Gettysburg and Adams County for many decades in our Historic Church, Xavier Center and parish school (located on Table Rock Road, just north of historic downtown Gettysburg). We welcome you into this tradition and pray you find Christ present at the center of all we do.
