Evangelization for the Salvation of All | Evangelización para la salvación de todos

Dear parish family and friends,

This weekend, July 26 and 27, the annual missionary co-op comes to our parish. Each year, a priest from a different religious order joins us to preach about the pastoral ministry that takes place in the countries they serve. Many of these locations are overseas where the Catholic Church is less established than here in the United States. This is one primary way of understanding “the missions” -- spreading the Gospel to the four corners of the earth. In this way, Jesus’ mandate to His Apostles before ascending is fulfilled, when He commanded: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

Historically speaking, missionaries from Europe, in particular, went out to bring the Catholic faith to places like the African continent, among other places. And there are still various other locations around the globe where the faith has yet to fully take root too. We call this initial proclamation of the salvation that is offered to us in Jesus through his Body, the Church, evangelization.

But in regard to evangelization, Pope John Paul II and other recent popes have taught about the urgent need for a “new evangelization” to occur in those places, like Europe and North America, that have been historically Christian, but where many have drifted from or abandoned their faith. For this, there is the need of re-proposing the person of Jesus to people who have heard His name but have not personally encountered Him in a way that is truly relevant to their lives. And so, we all have the call to actively share our Catholic faith with others, even here at home! Groups here at our parish like St. Paul Street Evangelization are working toward this.

Isn’t it interesting though, that those places that were once evangelized by missionaries from the West, have now become the beneficiaries of missionaries from places like Africa, who are helping to re-evangelize our culture! In this, an essential truth becomes apparent -- we are a universal church. In fact, that’s what the word “catholic” means!

We are not merely a parish, or even a diocese; we belong to a truly Catholic Church. And so, as we seek to help missionary co-ops throughout the world, may the Church continue to be built up fully for the salvation of all.

Este fin de semana, 26 y 27 de julio, la cooperativa misionera anual llega a nuestra parroquia. Cada año, un sacerdote de una orden religiosa diferente se une a nosotros para predicar sobre el ministerio pastoral que se lleva a cabo en los países donde sirven. Muchos de estos lugares se encuentran en el extranjero, donde la Iglesia Católica está menos establecida que aquí en Estados Unidos. Esta es una forma fundamental de entender “las misiones”: difundir el Evangelio a todos los rincones del mundo. De esta manera, se cumple el mandato de Jesús a sus apóstoles antes de cumplirse la ascensión: “Vayan y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones”.

Históricamente, los misioneros europeos, en particular, salieron a llevar la fe católica a lugares como el continente africano, entre otros. Y aún existen otros lugares del mundo donde la fe aún no ha arraigado plenamente. A esta primera proclamación de la salvación que se nos ofrece en Jesús a través de su Cuerpo, la Iglesia, la llamamos evangelización.

Pero en cuanto a la evangelización, el Papa Juan Pablo II y otros papas recientes han enseñado sobre la urgente necesidad de una “nueva evangelización” en lugares como Europa y Norteamérica, que históricamente han sido cristianos, pero donde muchos se han alejado o abandonado su fe. Para ello, es necesario volver a proponer la persona de Jesús a quienes han escuchado su nombre, pero no lo han encontrado personalmente de una manera verdaderamente relevante para sus vidas. Por lo tanto, todos estamos llamados a compartir activamente nuestra fe católica con los demás, ¡incluso aquí en casa! Grupos de nuestra parroquia, como la San Pablo Evangelización en la Calle, están trabajando en este sentido.

¿No es interesante, sin embargo, que aquellos lugares que una vez fueron evangelizados por misioneros de Occidente, ahora se hayan convertido en beneficiarios de misioneros de lugares como África, quienes están ayudando a reevangelizar nuestra cultura? En esto, se hace evidente una verdad esencial: somos una iglesia universal. De hecho, ¡eso es lo que significa la palabra “católica”! No somos simplemente una parroquia, ni siquiera una diócesis; pertenecemos a una Iglesia verdaderamente católica. Y así, mientras buscamos ayudar a las cooperativas misioneras en todo el mundo, que la Iglesia siga edificándose plenamente para la salvación de todos.
