Looking Ahead at Sunday of the Word of God | De cara al Domingo de la Palabra de Dios

Next week we will be celebrating the Sunday of the Word of God. In his Apostolic Letter Aperuit illis issued on September 30, 2019, Pope Francis established that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to “celebration, study, and spreading of the Word of God.“ It is a day that invites Catholics across the world to deepen their appreciation, love, and faithful witness to God and his Word. This year, the Sunday of the Word of God falls on January 25.
According to Pope Francis, “There is one particular way of listening to what the Lord wishes to tell us in his word and of letting ourselves be transformed by the Spirit. We must listen to God’s word, and then, in the moments that follow, ask ‘Lord, what does this text say to me? What is it about my life that you want to change by this text? What troubles me about this text? Or perhaps: What do I find pleasant in this text? What is it about this word that moves me?’”
This year’s theme for the Sunday of the Word of God is “The word of Christ dwells among you.” The word “dwell” means to live or reside; it carries a suggestion of relationship rather than fleeting moments of encounter. It is a beautiful thing to hear the Word of God proclaimed at Mass, but do we revisit the Sunday Scriptures on our own time, allowing the Holy Spirit to use them to shape our lives? To know Christ, we must know His Word. If we consume the Word of God daily, we will find that it has the power to transform our lives.
The second part of this year’s theme is “among you.” When we find ourselves drawing peace, wisdom,\ and courage from the Word of God we will be able to share it with those we encounter every day. The better we know the Word of God, the better equipped we will be to reflect Christ to our brothers and sisters. We can pass along the comfort we have found and give a ready answer to the challenges that are sure to come.
Lent begins on February 18, and we all know that during Lent we are called to prayer, fasting, and abstinence. Perhaps this Lent we can find time outside of Mass to pray with the Scriptures. A good place to start with the Word of God is with the Sunday readings. Perhaps read them before attending Mass and then again after Mass considering what you have heard in the homily. Ascension Press has a wonderful resource called Sundays with Ascension with homilies and podcasts. Resources can also be found on the website of The United States Council of Catholic Bishops at usccb.org. Both resources will even have content sent directly to your email inbox. Whatever you choose to do, simply step forward in faith and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you and reveal to you the wonders of the Word of God.

La próxima semana celebraremos el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios. En su Carta Apostólica Aperuit illis, publicada el 30 de septiembre de 2019, el Papa Francisco estableció que el Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario se dedicará a la “celebración, el estudio y la difusión de la Palabra de Dios”. Es un día que invita a los católicos de todo el mundo a profundizar su aprecio, amor y testimonio fiel de Dios y su Palabra. Este año, el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios cae el 25 de enero.
Según el Papa Francisco, “Hay una manera particular de escuchar lo que el Señor desea decirnos en su palabra y de dejarnos transformar por el Espíritu. Debemos escuchar la palabra de Dios y luego, en los momentos siguientes, preguntarnos: ‘Señor, ¿qué me dice este texto? ¿Qué aspecto de mi vida quieres cambiar con este texto? ¿Qué me inquieta de este texto? O quizás: ¿Qué encuentro agradable en este texto? ¿Qué me conmueve de esta palabra?’”
El tema de este año para el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios es “La palabra de Cristo habita entre vosotros”. La palabra “habitar” significa vivir o residir; sugiere una relación en lugar de momentos fugaces de encuentro. Es hermoso escuchar la Palabra de Dios proclamada en la Misa, pero ¿revisamos las Escrituras dominicales en nuestro tiempo libre, permitiendo que el Espíritu Santo las use para moldear nuestras vidas? Para conocer a Cristo, debemos conocer su Palabra. Si consumimos la Palabra de Dios a diario, descubriremos que tiene el poder de transformar nuestras vidas.
La segunda parte del tema de este año es “entre nosotros”. Cuando encontramos paz, sabiduría y valentía en la Palabra de Dios, podremos compartirla con quienes encontramos cada día. Cuanto mejor conozcamos la Palabra de Dios, mejor preparados estaremos para reflejar a Cristo a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Podemos transmitir el consuelo que hemos encontrado y dar una respuesta oportuna a los desafíos que seguramente surgirán.
La Cuaresma comienza el 18 de febrero, y todos sabemos que durante la Cuaresma estamos llamados a la oración, el ayuno y la abstinencia. Quizás esta Cuaresma podamos encontrar tiempo fuera de la Misa para orar con las Escrituras. Un buen punto de partida para la Palabra de Dios son las lecturas dominicales. Quizás les convenga leerlas antes de asistir a misa y luego nuevamente después, reflexionando sobre lo que escucharon en la homilía. También pueden encontrar recursos en el sitio web de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos en usccb.org. Ambos recursos incluso les enviarán contenido directamente a su correo electrónico. Sea cual sea su elección, simplemente avancen con fe y permitan que el Espíritu Santo los guíe y les revele las maravillas de la Palabra de Dios.
