Conforming our hearts | Conformando nuestros corazones

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,
“Rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD!”
There is nothing that we should want more than to be as close as possible, and to conform our hearts, to the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord. To seek the center, the core, the heart, of divine love. We should chase it, pursue it, embrace it, and unite ourselves to it. It is the meaning of human life. To be like God, to be with God. Christianity has as its goal to be united to divinity in a relationship of perfect love.
As I write this, I am reading the biography of St. Therese of Lisieux. Shortly before the Little Flower, Therese, enters the Carmelite Monastery, she discerns a vocation to save sinners. She does so by diving deeply into prayer to the heart of God’s love for all, especially those most in need of his mercy. Her first target is an unrepentant murderer she read about in the news. She prayed fervently for his soul, and then for a sign from God that her prayer had been answered. As she read the newspaper the day after his execution, the description included the detail that as he mounted the instrument of his punishment, as though by a divine inspiration, he turned to the priest that was available to receive his confession and kissed the priest’s crucifix three times. To little Therese, this was her miraculous sign that her intercessory prayers for him had been answered, and this act of reverence had sufficed to grant mercy to his soul.
Therese had been favored by very loving parents, and a gaggle of sisters, who were extremely dedicated to their Catholic faith. This school of faith in their home, the pattern of daily family prayers, as well as the feasts and Sundays in the Church, excited the heart and soul of Therese more than anything else.
As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, where our Lord Jesus learned in his humanity to pray, live, and worship as the covenant people of God, may our family homes also be a school to teach a deep love of prayer, to seek above all else the love of the Sacred Heart of our Lord, and to share this love with each other, especially those most in need.
