Peace for His Disciples

“I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD — for he proclaims peace.”

Psalm 85

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,
“I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD — for he proclaims peace.”

This line at the beginning of our responsorial psalm this weekend is an essential element of what God wants to do in the world, and in you. It was also an important part of the expectation of the Messiah: peace for the People of God. There is unity in God. Everything in God is perfectly one, and everything God thinks, desires, and does is one. He is perfectly at peace.

And so why does Jesus in the Gospels say, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword”? 

Not everyone will put all of their faith in Jesus. Not everyone will devote themselves entirely to his continued presence and ministry in the world that is His Church. We have those who attempt to correct the Church to conform to their socio-political ideologies. We have some who only believe in God when they’re in a pickle, and pay Him little attention the rest of the time. We have some who come to Church only when they’re in the mood, or as long as absolutely nothing else is an alternative option. We have some who come to Church as they ought to, maybe even to daily Mass, and have not yet truly become disciples of Jesus, willing to trust him unconditionally, in absolute love of Him.

There will be friction and tension between true disciples of Jesus who are faithful to Him and His Church, and those who are not. Those who are His disciples will have a deep interior peace that cannot be taken away (even in times of distress, or when motivated, by love, to pursue justice for others). And those who are not will have a storm of discontent within, even when things seem good. The promise in our psalm is fulfilled in Jesus Christ the Messiah, in mystery and faith in Him, in the hearts of those who entrust themselves to His heart. If you want that peace that the world cannot give, ask Him, listen for His voice, and follow Him.

Estimadas familias y amigos de la parroquia San Francisco Xavier,

“Escuchare lo que dice Dios; el SEÑOR, porque él proclama la paz.”

Esta línea al comienzo de nuestro salmo responsorial este fin de semana es un elemento esencial de lo que Dios quiere hacer en el mundo y en ti. Era también parte importante de la espera del Mesías: paz para el Pueblo de Dios. Hay unidad en Dios. Todo en Dios es perfectamente uno, y todo lo que Dios piensa, desea y hace es uno. Está perfectamente en paz.

Entonces, ¿por qué Jesús en los Evangelios dice: “No piensen que he venido a traer paz a la tierra. no he venido a traer paz, sino una espada”?

No todos pondrán toda su fe en Jesús. No todos se dedicarán por completo a su presencia y ministerio continuos en el mundo que es Su Iglesia. Tenemos a quienes intentan corregir a la Iglesia para que se ajuste a sus ideologías sociopolíticas. Tenemos algunos que solo creen en Dios cuando están en apuros y le prestan poca atención el resto del tiempo. Tenemos algunos que vienen a la Iglesia solo cuando están de humor o “cuando les nace”, o siempre que nada más sea una opción alternativa. Tenemos algunos que vienen a la Iglesia como deberían, tal vez incluso a la Misa diaria, y aún no se han convertido verdaderamente en discípulos de Jesús, dispuestos a confiar en Él incondicionalmente, en absoluto amor por Él.

Habrá fricción y tensión entre los verdaderos discípulos de Jesús que son fieles a Él y a Su Iglesia, y los que no lo son. Los que son sus discípulos tendrán una profunda paz interior que no se les puede quitar (incluso en tiempos de angustia, o cuando estén motivados, por el amor, a buscar la justicia para los demás). Y los que no, tendrán una tormenta de descontento en su interior, incluso cuando las cosas parezcan buenas. La promesa de nuestro salmo se cumple en Jesucristo el Mesías, en el misterio y la fe en Él, en el corazón de los que se encomiendan a Su corazón. Si quieres esa paz que el mundo no puede dar, pídela, escucha Su voz y síguelo.
