14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Well, we are in the doldrums of summer – that great time of year when things seem to slow down and we enjoy the lazy, hazy days of July… or not!!

I’d like to take this opportunity to speak to some of the initial impressions that I’ve had so far as pastor of St. Francis Xavier.

First, I just have to comment on how welcomed I have felt. From a gift basket on the rectory dining room table to so many smiles, well wishes, and even hugs, I have felt that you have gone out of your way to make me feel like I already belong here! There are some particular “God incidents” that I’d like to share One day, I literally ate my last slice of bread, and didn’t have time to run to the grocery store. Do you know that day someone brought me a loaf of homemade bread! Then, another day, I was going from meeting to meeting, and had no time to run back to the rectory for dinner. Do you know that day someone brought me a complete meal to the parish offices, where I ate it?

You know sometimes we might underestimate how God will use those little things to remind us that we are not alone. He sends us these “confirming signs” of His presence with us.

Truly God is with us in the holy Eucharist – who, in fact, becomes God within us – as we celebrated on Corpus Christi. Truly God is with us in the living Voice of the Magesterium, by which the Holy Spirit leads us into the fullness of truth – as we celebrated in a special way on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. But, as we move deeper into Ordinary Time (named for the ordinal numbers – i.e. the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time), we remember God is truly with us as the Body of Christ, which is the Church, in the loving and caring ways we interact with one another, big and small. This also is an important part of being Church. Thank you!

14.º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Bueno, estamos en pleno verano, esa época del año en la que todo parece calmarse y disfrutamos de los tranquilos y brumosos días de julio... ¡o no!

Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para hablar de algunas de las primeras impresiones que he tenido como párroco de San Francisco Javier.

Primero, quiero comentar lo bien recibido que me he sentido. Desde una cesta de regalo en la mesa del comedor de la rectoría hasta tantas sonrisas, buenos deseos e incluso abrazos, ¡he sentido que se han esforzado por hacerme sentir como si ya perteneciera aquí!

Hay algunos "incidentes de Dios" que me gustaría compartir. Un día, literalmente me comí mi última rebanada de pan y no tuve tiempo de ir corriendo al supermercado. ¿Saben que ese día alguien me trajo una hogaza de pan casero? Luego, otro día, iba de reunión en reunión y no tuve tiempo de volver corriendo a la rectoría para cenar. ¿Saben que ese día alguien me llevó una comida completa a la oficina parroquial, donde la comí?

A veces subestimamos cómo Dios usa esas pequeñas cosas para recordarnos que no estamos solos. Él nos envía estas "señales de confirmación" de su presencia.

Verdaderamente Dios está con nosotros en la Sagrada Eucaristía —quien, de hecho, se hace Dios en nosotros—, como celebramos el Corpus Christi. Verdaderamente Dios está con nosotros en la Voz viva del Magisterio, por la cual el Espíritu Santo nos conduce a la plenitud de la verdad, como celebramos de manera especial en la Solemnidad de los Santos Pedro y Pablo. Pero, a medida que nos adentramos en el Tiempo Ordinario (llamado así por los números ordinales, es decir, el 14.º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario), recordamos que Dios está verdaderamente con nosotros como Cuerpo de Cristo, que es la Iglesia, en las formas amorosas y cariñosas en que interactuamos unos con otros, grandes y pequeños. Esto también es una parte importante de ser Iglesia. ¡Gracias!
