Renew Your Mind | Renueva tu Mente

“Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God…” 

Romans 12

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,  

“Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God…” 

This excerpt from our second reading, from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, is applicable in every generation.  

The Church, responding to controversies in every age, pores over the scriptures anew, although she knows them intimately, as well as divine and human principles, and consulting applicable knowledge and wisdom (including subject-matter experts in various sciences), all, as it is said, on her knees in prayer. And she lovingly but firmly teaches her children as “Mater et Magistra” (a Latin title for the Church meaning “Mother and Teacher”). The Church always has the fulfillment of humanity (personally and communally) by the grace of God through the Paschal Mystery of Christ as her focus. And as we learned last weekend, what the Church teaches by the authority of the Office of Peter, is bound by the gates of heaven as it is bound by the magisterium of the Church on earth. 

When it comes to the moral teaching of the Church, we can often struggle. We especially struggle when the teaching of the Church differs from what we are told by secular society. Our society has many good people who try to be compassionate, kind, fair, empowering, and loving. But by pushing the truth of God out of the picture, these good intentions can end up misdirected and harming both individuals and society in unforeseeable ways.  

At the same time, the teaching of the Church can seem unkind, uncompassionate, and even unloving. Because often it’s the love of God that draws us to him through the embrace of the cross (which the world mocks). We must humbly let go of some of our thoughts, feelings, desires, our perspectives, our habits, which might seem good. But if we trust and embrace God’s will, it could be unimaginably better.  

To renew your mind so as to discern God’s will, ask Him in prayer to let you see as He sees.

Estimadas familias y amigos de la parroquia San Francisco Xavier,

“No se dejen transformar por los criterios de este mundo, sino dejen que una nueva manera de pensar los transforme internamente, para que sepan distinguir cuál es la voluntad de Dios…”

Este extracto de nuestra segunda lectura, de la carta de San Pablo a los Romanos, es aplicable a todas las generaciones.

La Iglesia, respondiendo a las controversias de cada época, examina minuciosamente las Escrituras de nuevo, aunque las conoce íntimamente, así como los principios divinos y humanos, y consulta el conocimiento y la sabiduría aplicables (incluidos los expertos en la materia en diversas ciencias), todo, como se dice, de rodillas en oración. Y con amor pero con firmeza enseña a sus hijos como “Mater et Magistra ” (un título latino para la Iglesia que significa “Madre y Maestra”). La Iglesia siempre tiene como enfoque la realización de la humanidad (personal y comunitariamente) por la gracia de Dios a través del Misterio Pascual de Cristo. Y como aprendimos el fin de semana pasado, lo que la Iglesia enseña por la autoridad del Oficio de Pedro, está limitado por las puertas del cielo como lo está por el magisterio de la Iglesia en la tierra.

Cuando se trata de la enseñanza moral de la Iglesia, a menudo podemos tener dificultades. Luchamos especialmente cuando las enseñanzas de la Iglesia difieren de lo que nos dice la sociedad secular. Nuestra sociedad tiene muchas personas buenas que intentan ser compasivas, amables, justas, empoderadoras y amorosas. Pero al dejar de lado la verdad de Dios, estas buenas intenciones pueden terminar mal dirigidas y dañar tanto a los individuos como a la sociedad de maneras imprevisibles.

Al mismo tiempo, las enseñanzas de la Iglesia pueden parecer crueles, carentes de compasión e incluso carentes de amor. Porque muchas veces es el amor de Dios el que nos atrae a él a través del abrazo de la cruz (de la que el mundo se burla). Debemos dejar de lado humildemente algunos de nuestros pensamientos, sentimientos, deseos, perspectivas y hábitos que puedan parecer buenos. Pero si confiamos y abrazamos la voluntad de Dios, podría ser inimaginablemente mejor.

Para renovar tu mente y discernir la voluntad de Dios, pídele en oración que te permita ver como Él ve.
