Looking Back at Confirmation in March 2026

Next Sunday, May 24, we’ll celebrate Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to the disciples. Back on Wednesday, March 25, the gift of the Holy Spirit was sealed within more than 50 youth and adults, who received the sacrament of Confirmation at our parish. In the Sacrament of Confirmation, when the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, they are strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. The individuals who receive the Sacrament are called confirmands. They spent two years learning and preparing to receive this Sacrament.

Bishop Timothy Senior of the Diocese of Harrisburg conferred the Sacrament on the confirmands. As he gave the homily, he spoke of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord (celebrated on the same day), in which Mary accepted God’s will to be the mother of Jesus. He expressed how her “Yes” transformed the lives of all people for all time. Bishop Senior encouraged the confirmands and audience to accept God's will even when it's unexpected, like Mary experienced. He shared how God may have surprises for us, and encouraged everyone to be like Mary and let the Holy Spirit guide us to accept his will. He advised that it's not always easy, but to remember all that Mary carried throughout her life, up to seeing Jesus on the cross. He also assured everyone that when you say yes like Mary did, you will be blessed abundantly.

With Confirmation taking place near the end of Lent, the altar was draped in purple, and statues and images were covered in purple as well. This symbolizes the mourning and anticipation of Christ’s Passion coming up in Holy Week. Music was provided by the Spanish choir Guitarras del Cielo, as well as members of the St. Francis Xavier Teen Choir.

Afterward, attendees enjoyed refreshments provided and served by the Parish Council of Catholic Women (PCCW). Many thanks to PCCW members---Jeanne Blaker, Katie O'Farrell and Maritza Torres---who served the refreshments.

Grateful thanks to Guitarras del Cielo and the SFX Teen Choir for providing the music. Many thanks also to everyone involved in the teaching, planning, preparing and day-of activities to make Confirmation a success. We pray that the Holy Spirit remain strong and steadfast within these confirmands throughout their lives.
