Giving Thanks for Our Mothers and Blessed Mother Mary | Dando gracias por nuestras madres y por la Santísima Madre María

Dear parish family and friends,
Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers, grandmothers, and godmothers. Today, in a special way, we pause to honor the women who have nurtured, loved, and guided us throughout our lives.
In this month of Mary, appropriately enough, we also celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Blessed Mother. In a special way during May we honor MArY, for she is the mother of Jesus, our Savior. We honor Mary with a special devotion, as is just. But we never worship her, for such worship is for God alone. Even when we call Mary “Mother of God”, we are affirming a central mystery of our faith: that Jesus Christ is true God and true man – one divine person with two natures—fully human and fully divine.
In the original creation, the first family of Adam and Eve fell into the sin that is at the origin of humanity through disobedience, which led to death. Now, in the re-creation, through the obedience of the Son and the yes of his mother, God the Father restores us to eternal life through the Holy Spirit. And since the Church is the Body of Christ, of which He is the head, she is also the mother of the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church.
At the foot of the Cross, Jesus gave us a profound gift. Looking at His mother and the beloved disciple, He said, "Woman, behold, your son," and to the disciple, "Behold, your mother" (Jn. 19:26-27). Although Jesus was providing for the temporal needs of his mother, soon to grieve her son’s death, He was also giving to John – the model disciple for us all as “beloved disciples” – a spiritual mother in the order of grace. At that moment, Mary became the mother of all who belong to Christ. As Pope Paul VI officially proclaimed during the Second Vatican Council, she is the “Mother of the Church” – of all the faithful and pastors. Just as she cared for the infant Jesus, Mary now watches over the “pilgrim Church” with a mother’s love, nurturing the spiritual life of her children.
As a mother, though, Mary does more than just watch over us. As our mother, she knows the challenges that we, her children, all face. She knows our struggles, our trials, and our hardships. And, in love, she supports us with her tender, yet powerful prayers. Further still, she is a model of perseverance – to keep showing up, even when it’s hard. God can do so much in our lives, but He needs our yes to Him each day. She is a model in this for us.
And so, as we give thanks to God for the gift of our mothers today, we also give thanks to Jesus for completing the spiritual family by giving us a mother – His mother. May you and your family know the compassionate love of Mary, our Blessed Mother.

¡Feliz Día de la Madre a todas nuestras madres, abuelas y madrinas! Hoy, de una manera especial, hacemos una pausa para honrar a las mujeres que nos han criado, amado y guiado a lo largo de nuestras vidas.
En este mes de María —como corresponde— celebramos también a la Santísima Virgen María, nuestra Madre Bendita. De un modo particular, durante el mes de mayo honramos a María, pues ella es la madre de Jesús, nuestro Salvador. Honramos a María con una devoción especial, tal como es justo; sin embargo, nunca la adoramos, pues tal adoración corresponde únicamente a Dios. Incluso cuando llamamos a María “Madre de Dios”, estamos afirmando un misterio central de nuestra fe: que Jesucristo es verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre; una sola persona divina con dos naturalezas: plenamente humana y plenamente divina.
En la creación original, la primera familia —la de Adán y Eva— cayó en el pecado que se halla en el origen de la humanidad a causa de la desobediencia, lo cual condujo a la muerte. Ahora, en la recreación, y gracias a la obediencia del Hijo y al «sí» de su madre, Dios Padre nos restituye a la vida eterna por medio del Espíritu Santo. Y dado que la Iglesia es el Cuerpo de Cristo —del cual Él es la Cabeza—, ella es también la madre del Cuerpo Místico de Cristo: la Iglesia.
Al pie de la Cruz, Jesús nos hizo un regalo profundo. Mirando a su madre y al discípulo amado, dijo: “Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo”; y al discípulo: “Ahí tienes a tu madre” (Jn 19, 26-27). Si bien Jesús estaba proveyendo a las necesidades temporales de su madre —quien pronto habría de sufrir el duelo por la muerte de su Hijo—, estaba también entregando a Juan —el discípulo modelo para todos nosotros, en cuanto “discípulos amados”— una madre espiritual en el orden de la gracia. En aquel instante, María se convirtió en la madre de todos aquellos que pertenecen a Cristo. Tal como proclamó oficialmente el Papa Pablo VI durante el Concilio Vaticano II, ella es la “Madre de la Iglesia”: madre de todos los fieles y de todos los pastores. Del mismo modo en que cuidó del Niño Jesús, María vela ahora por la “Iglesia peregrina” con amor de madre, alimentando la vida espiritual de sus hijos.
Sin embargo, en su condición de madre, María hace mucho más que limitarse a velar por nosotros. Como nuestra madre, ella conoce los desafíos que todos nosotros, sus hijos, enfrentamos. Conoce nuestras luchas, nuestras pruebas y nuestras adversidades. Y, con amor, nos sostiene con sus oraciones: tiernas, pero poderosas. Es más aún: ella es un modelo de perseverancia, de seguir presente y firme, incluso cuando resulta difícil. Dios puede obrar maravillas en nuestras vidas, pero necesita nuestro “sí” cada día. En esto, ella es un modelo para nosotros
Por ello, al dar gracias a Dios hoy por el regalo de nuestras madres, damos también gracias a Jesús por completar la familia espiritual al darnos una madre: Su propia Madre. Que ustedes y sus familias experimenten el amor compasivo de María, nuestra Madre Bendita.
