Dear Parish family and friends,

One of the most beautiful traditions in the life of the Church is Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotions. During this special period of prayer, the Blessed Sacrament is solemnly exposed so that we can spend extended time in the presence of Jesus Christ—truly present in His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.  This year, 40 Hours takes place here on July 28, 29, and 30.

The number forty has deep meaning throughout Sacred Scripture. The rain fell for forty days in the time of Noah. The Israelites journeyed for forty years through the desert. Moses remained on Mount Sinai for forty days, and Jesus fasted and prayed for forty days before beginning His public ministry. Traditionally, the Forty Hours devotion also recalls the time between the death of Jesus on Good Friday and His Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Forty Hours is more than an extended period of exposition. It is also a spiritual retreat for the entire parish. In the midst of busy schedules, family responsibilities, work, school, and countless distractions, Jesus invites us to step away for a time and remain with Him.

When it comes to Eucharistic Adoration, some may feel that they don’t know what to say or do. One of the best things is simply to place ourselves before the Lord and allow Him to look upon us with love.

Bring Him your gratitude, your worries, your family, your disappointments, your sins, your hopes, and your plans. Spend time reading the Scriptures, praying the Rosary, or simply resting quietly in His presence.

Saint John Vianney once described a parishioner who spent long periods before the tabernacle. When asked what he was doing, the man replied, “I look at Him, and He looks at me.” That simple exchange expresses the heart of Eucharistic Adoration. We come not merely to accomplish something, but to be with Someone.

This year, our format will be a little different to give people more opportunities. Each morning, at 8:30 am, there will be a morning conference in English, given by Fr. James Sullivan, O.P. covering the theme of "The Monstrance of our Lives: Living the Graces of the Eucharist in Faith, Hope, and Charity."  Confessions will follow. 

Then, each evening, at 7 pm, Vespers, followed by a bilingual conference, will be given by Fr. John Martin Ruiz-Mayorga, O.P., and will center on the theme of "The Gifts of the Holy Spirit: God’s Secret Action in our Lives.”

I encourage every parishioner and every family to participate. Please consider committing to a period of adoration by signing up on the poster that will be in the lobbies of both the historic church in the Xavier Center. Parents might bring their children, even for a shorter visit. Those who have not been to Adoration for some time should not feel hesitant. Simply come.

In a world filled with noise, division, anxiety, and restlessness, Jesus waits for us in the silence of the Eucharist. May our Forty Hours devotion be a time of healing, conversion, renewal, and deeper love for the Lord.

Una de las tradiciones más hermosas en la vida de la Iglesia es la devoción eucarística de las Cuarenta Horas. Durante este tiempo especial de oración, el Santísimo Sacramento queda expuesto solemnemente para que podamos pasar un tiempo prolongado en presencia de Jesucristo, verdaderamente presente en su Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad. Este año, las Cuarenta Horas se celebrarán aquí los días 28, 29 y 30 de julio.

El número cuarenta tiene un profundo significado en toda la Sagrada Escritura. La lluvia cayó durante cuarenta días en tiempos de Noé. Los israelitas peregrinaron durante cuarenta años por el desierto. Moisés permaneció en el monte Sinaí durante cuarenta días, y Jesús ayunó y oró durante cuarenta días antes de comenzar su ministerio público. Tradicionalmente, la devoción de las Cuarenta Horas también conmemora el tiempo transcurrido entre la muerte de Jesús el Viernes Santo y su Resurrección el Domingo de Pascua.

Las Cuarenta Horas son más que un periodo prolongado de exposición del Santísimo; son también un retiro espiritual para toda la parroquia. Llévenle su gratitud, sus preocupaciones, su familia, sus decepciones, sus pecados, sus esperanzas y sus planes. Dediquen tiempo a leer las Escrituras, a rezar el Rosario o simplemente a descansar en silencio en su presencia.

San Juan María Vianney describió una vez a un feligrés que pasaba largos periodos ante el sagrario. Cuando le preguntaron qué hacía, el hombre respondió: "Yo le miro a Él, y Él me mira a mí". Ese sencillo intercambio expresa la esencia de la Adoración Eucarística. No venimos simplemente a realizar algo, sino a estar con Alguien.

Este año, el formato será un poco diferente para ofrecer más oportunidades a los fieles. Cada mañana, a las 8:30 a. m., habrá una charla matutina en inglés, impartida por el P. James Sullivan, O.P., sobre el tema: "La custodia de nuestras vidas: vivir las gracias de la Eucaristía en la fe, la esperanza y la caridad". A continuación, habrá confesiones.

Luego, cada tarde a las 7:00 p. m., se rezarán las Vísperas, seguidas de una charla bilingüe a cargo del P. John Martin Ruiz-Mayorga, O.P., centrada en el tema: "Los dones del Espíritu Santo: la acción secreta de Dios en nuestras vidas".

Animo a todos los feligreses y a todas las familias a participar. Por favor, consideren comprometerse a un tiempo de adoración inscribiéndose en el cartel que estará colocado en los vestíbulos tanto de la iglesia histórica como del Centro Xavier. Los padres pueden traer a sus hijos, aunque sea para una visita breve. Aquellos que lleven tiempo sin asistir a la Adoración no deben dudar en hacerlo; simplemente vengan.

En un mundo lleno de ruido, división, ansiedad e inquietud, Jesús nos espera en el silencio de la Eucaristía. Que nuestra devoción de las Cuarenta Horas sea un tiempo de sanación, conversión, renovación y un amor más profundo hacia el Señor.
