Discovering Christ and Pilgrimage to Greece | Descubriendo a Cristo y peregrinaje a Grecia

Dear Parish family and friends,

By this point, you’ve likely heard about Discovering Christ.  Discovering Christ is a seven-week course that creates a welcoming environment where members of a parish will hear the Good News and personally encounter Jesus Christ.  Each session includes light fare and refreshments, a brief time of prayer and worship, a video teaching, and small group discussion.  The high point of the course is a day retreat where guests have the opportunity to ratify their personal commitment to Jesus Christ and be renewed in the Holy Spirit.  Everyone – from faithful Catholics to non-Catholics – can participate and attend.

I personally have experienced the amazing fruit that the Holy Spirit brings about through Discovering Christ – both in individual lives, as well as in the overall culture of parish life.  This will be my 4th time in bringing Discovering Christ to a parish. 

Over the years, I’ve heard some obstacles people have felt along the way about signing up for Discovering Christ.  “What if I can’t come to every session?”  No worries – come to those you can.  “I don’t have a babysitter.”  Childcare will actually be provided.  “I’m not a ‘good enough Catholic’ – only those people come to stuff like this.”  Not true – Discovering Christ is for everyone.  Sometimes, people prefer a more anonymous approach to being Catholic.  And while I myself am a little on the shy side, I know the great joy of taking a risk to be vulnerable in sharing faith with others.  God indeed blesses us for our sacrifices.

Querida familia y amigos de la parroquia:

Es probable que ya hayan oído hablar de Discovering Christ (Descubriendo a Cristo). Se trata de un curso de siete semanas que crea un ambiente acogedor donde los feligreses pueden escuchar la Buena Nueva y tener un encuentro personal con Jesucristo. Cada sesión incluye una buena comida, un breve momento de oración y alabanza, una enseñanza en video y un tiempo de diálogo en grupos pequeños. El punto culminante del curso es un retiro de un día, en el que los participantes tienen la oportunidad de reafirmar su compromiso personal con Jesucristo y renovarse en el Espíritu Santo. Todos —desde católicos practicantes hasta personas que no son católicas— pueden participar y asistir.

Personalmente, he sido testigo de los frutos maravillosos que el Espíritu Santo genera a través de Discovering Christ, tanto en la vida de las personas como en la cultura general de la parroquia. Esta será la cuarta vez que llevo este programa a una comunidad parroquial.

A lo largo de los años, he escuchado algunos de los obstáculos que la gente percibe a la hora de inscribirse en Discovering Christ. "¿Y si no puedo asistir a todas las sesiones?" No se preocupen: asistan a las que puedan. "No tengo quién cuide a mis hijos". De hecho, se ofrecerá servicio de cuidado infantil. "No soy un 'católico lo suficientemente bueno'; a estas cosas solo va esa clase de gente". No es cierto: Discovering Christ es para todos. A veces, las personas prefieren vivir su fe católica de manera más anónima. Aunque yo mismo soy algo tímido, conozco la gran alegría que se siente al arriesgarse a mostrarse vulnerable y compartir la fe con los demás. Dios realmente nos bendice por nuestros sacrificios.

Me complace informar que ha habido una gran respuesta, tanto por parte de nuestra parroquia como de fuera de ella. Actualmente, hay 20 personas inscritas para acompañarnos.
