Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,
“Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight… Forgive your neighbor's injustice… hate not your neighbor; remember the Most High's covenant, and overlook faults.”
In our first reading for this weekend, we hear this strong advice against harboring wrath and anger. When Sirach says “These are hateful things,” we can take it to mean we should hate wrath and anger. But we can also take it to mean that wrath and anger against others operate on principles of hate. Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, “Whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” And St. John says in his first letter, “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer…”
Our readings this weekend stress the necessity to remember that while others may have committed something against our preferences, against our feelings, or even something truly unjust against us, we are to remember that by each of our sins, we do an infinitely greater injustice toward God, and that as “ The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion,” so must we be as His Holy People.
Jesus was very patient with offenses against himself, but passionate about addressing injustices against the needy because Jesus wasn’t about himself, but about the love and mercy of the Father. Let us work on being forgiving about offenses against ourselves, and intent to address injustices against the needy.
This Sunday is Catechetical Sunday, which corresponds to the first Sunday of our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP). It is a ministry that assists our parish parents of school-age children in their holy obligation to form their children by the truth of the Catholic faith, the need to form hearts and minds by sacramental grace and scriptural truth, and helping them to resist the errors and vices in the secular world. We thank our PREP catechists, our parochial school teachers, and the families, volunteers, and benefactors who support these important ministries for the true good of our parish children and families.

Estimadas familias y amigos de la parroquia San Francisco Xavier,
“Cosas abominables son el rencor y la cólera, sin embargo, el pecador se aferra a ellas… Perdona la ofensa de tu prójimo… no guardes rencor a tu prójimo; Recuerda la alianza del Altísimo y pasa por alto las ofensas”.
En nuestra primera lectura de este fin de semana, escuchamos este fuerte consejo en contra de albergar cólera y rencor. Cuando Sirácide dice “estas son cosas abominables (odiosas)”, podemos entender que debemos odiar el rencor y la cólera. Pero también podemos entender que significa que la cólera y el rencor contra otros operan sobre principios de odio. Jesús dice en el Sermón de la Montaña: “Cualquiera que se enoje con su hermano será reo de juicio”. Y San Juan dice en su primera carta: “Todo el que aborrece a su hermano es homicida…”
Nuestras lecturas de este fin de semana enfatizan la necesidad de recordar que si bien otros pueden haber cometido algo en contra de nuestras preferencias, en contra de nuestros sentimientos o incluso algo verdaderamente injusto contra nosotros, debemos recordar que con cada uno de nuestros pecados cometemos una injusticia infinitamente mayor hacia Dios. , y que así como “El Señor es bondadoso y misericordioso, lento para la cólera y rico en compasión”, así debemos ser nosotros como Su Pueblo Santo.
Jesús fue muy paciente con las ofensas contra sí mismo, pero apasionado por abordar las injusticias contra los necesitados, porque Jesús no se enfocaba en sí mismo, sino del amor y la misericordia del Padre. Trabajemos para perdonar las ofensas contra nosotros mismos y tratar de abordar las injusticias contra los necesitados.
Este domingo es el Domingo Catequético, que corresponde al primer domingo de nuestro Programa Parroquial de Educación Religiosa (PREP). Es un ministerio que ayuda a nuestros padres de la parroquia con niños en edad escolar, en su santa obligación de formar a sus hijos por la verdad de la fe católica, la necesidad de formar corazones y mentes por la gracia sacramental y la verdad bíblica, y ayudarlos a resistir la errores y vicios en el mundo secular. Agradecemos a nuestros catequistas de PREP, a nuestros maestros de escuelas parroquiales, y a las familias, voluntarios y benefactores que apoyan estos importantes ministerios para el verdadero bien de nuestros niños y familias parroquiales.
