Unity, Hope and Sacrifice | Unidad, Esperanza y Sacrificio

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,  

“Strengthen the bond of unity between the faithful and the pastors of your people, together with [Francis] our Pope, [Timothy] our Bishop, and the whole Order of Bishops, that in a world torn by strife, your people may shine forth as a prophetic sign of unity and concord.” 

These words come from one of the Eucharistic Prayers available for the priest celebrant to use in the Mass. It has become one of my favorites, in that lately the Church doesn’t seem to shine forth as a prophetic sign of unity and concord, but tragically reflects and suffers from the same wounds, sins, and vices that our worldly culture does. Which makes sense, if we’re more formed by the media than transformed by the gospels, and we spend more time on our devices than on our knees in prayer.  

I was recently asked, “What’s the goal of the bilingual Mass?” My response was something like, “The 9 a.m. Mass displays the true reality of our parish. Our two communities of two different races, cultures, and languages come together, willing to accept some sacrifices and some sufferings, including some preferences and conveniences, for the sake of coming together as our parish before the altar of God to worship him as his children, his family, the Church. The hopes and challenges, the difficulties and blessings, and the potential are there to see. The bilingual Mass is the sacramental image of our parish.”  

It might not always seem glorious, similar to how what our senses tell us is a bland little dough wafer is actually the sacramental body of our Lord Jesus Christ. But with the eyes of faith and a heart of love, we can sense something deeper, and more important, than what our limited senses reveal to us. That’s the Christian mystery, the mystery of the cross. What seems difficult or even impossible to us is an opportunity for God to inspire and work miracles.  

We do have challenges before us in our parish, and we always will. Guided by the promptings of God’s grace, we can trust Him to guide us according to His plan.

Estimadas familias y amigos de la parroquia San Francisco Xavier,

“Fortalece el vínculo de unidad entre los fieles y los pastores de tu pueblo, junto con [Francisco] nuestro Papa, [Timoteo] nuestro Obispo y toda la Orden de Obispos, para que en un mundo desgarrado por los conflictos tu pueblo pueda brillar como un signo profético de unidad y concordia”.

Estas palabras provienen de una de las Plegarias Eucarísticas disponibles para que el sacerdote celebrante las use en la Misa. Se ha convertido en una de mis favoritas, en el sentido de que últimamente la Iglesia no parece brillar como un signo profético de unidad y concordia, sino que refleja trágicamente y sufre las mismas heridas, pecados y vicios que nuestra cultura mundana. Lo cual tiene sentido, si estamos más formados por los medios de comunicación que transformados por los evangelios, y pasamos más tiempo en nuestros dispositivos que de rodillas en oración.

Hace poco me preguntaron: "¿Cuál es el objetivo de la misa bilingüe?" Mi respuesta fue algo así como: “La misa de las 9 am muestra la verdadera realidad de nuestra parroquia. Nuestras dos comunidades de dos razas, culturas e idiomas diferentes se unen, dispuestas a aceptar algunos sacrificios y algunos sufrimientos, incluidas algunas preferencias y conveniencias, con el fin de reunirnos como nuestra parroquia ante el altar de Dios para adorarlo como a sus hijos, su familia, la Iglesia. Las esperanzas y los desafíos, las dificultades y las bendiciones y el potencial están ahí para verlos. La Misa bilingüe es la imagen sacramental de nuestra parroquia”.

Puede que no siempre parezca glorioso, similar a lo que nuestros sentidos nos dicen que es una pequeña oblea de masa suave que en realidad es el cuerpo sacramental de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Pero con los ojos de la fe y un corazón de amor, podemos sentir algo más profundo y más importante que lo que nos revelan nuestros sentidos limitados. Ese es el misterio cristiano, el misterio de la cruz. Lo que nos parece difícil o incluso imposible es una oportunidad para que Dios inspire y obre milagros.

Tenemos desafíos ante nosotros en nuestra parroquia, y siempre los tendremos. Guiados por los impulsos de la gracia de Dios, podemos confiar en que Él nos guiará según Su plan.
