The Impact of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness in Our Faith | El impacto de la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad en nuestra fe

Dear Parish Family,
As we approach America 250, the thing that keeps coming to my mind are the famous ones from the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson, that, “We are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights…life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” What a great sentiment as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday!
From the Catholic perspective, each matters so much for our faith and we should give thanks to God for them in our daily lives. The Church always has and always will protect and defend life from the “womb to the tomb.” Let us always speak up for the most vulnerable among us and make sure they enjoy life as much as we do – a life centered in and through Jesus Christ.
Liberty is another right that we honor and value above others. It makes us possible to choose how to live and work, and gives us the ability to worship our God freely and without reservation or condition. This freedom is quickly lost if we don’t protect and defend it. We should also thank God for the freedom to choose him and although it’s difficult because of sin, let us always seek to choose God before ourselves and look forward to eternal life with Him.
What about “the pursuit of happiness?” Of the three, I think this is the hardest one to understand, because it doesn’t promise us that we’ll be happy but rather, it promises us that we can strive for happiness. That no one can dictate what we say, do, or believe to be happy. Happiness can look different for each person but as a Catholic, we know and have always known that happiness lies not on this earth but with the promise of eternal beatitude with God in heaven. Instead of pursuing wealth and possessions, on this 4th of July, let us pursue a greater relationship with God which will, necessarily, make us happier than we could possibly imagine.

Querida familia parroquial:
A medida que nos acercamos a la conmemoración de los 250 años de Estados Unidos (*America 250*), lo que constantemente viene a mi mente son aquellas palabras célebres de la Declaración de Independencia redactada por Thomas Jefferson: que “hemos sido dotados por nuestro Creador de derechos inalienables... la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad”. ¡Qué gran sentimiento al celebrar el 250.º aniversario de Estados Unidos!
Desde la perspectiva católica, cada uno de estos derechos es fundamental para nuestra fe, y debemos dar gracias a Dios por ellos en nuestra vida cotidiana. La Iglesia siempre ha protegido y defendido - y siempre lo hará - la vida “desde el seno materno hasta la tumba”. Alcemos siempre la voz por los más vulnerables entre nosotros y aseguremos que disfruten de la vida tanto como nosotros: una vida centrada en Jesucristo y vivida a través de Él.
La libertad es otro derecho que honramos y valoramos por encima de otros. Nos permite elegir cómo vivir y trabajar, y nos da la capacidad de adorar a nuestro Dios libremente, sin reservas ni condiciones. Esta libertad se pierde rápidamente si no la protegemos y defendemos. También debemos agradecer a Dios por la libertad de elegirlo a Él; y aunque resulte difícil debido al pecado, busquemos siempre elegir a Dios por encima de nosotros mismos y anhelemos la vida eterna a su lado.
¿Qué hay de “la búsqueda de la felicidad”? De los tres, creo que este es el concepto más difícil de comprender, ya que no nos promete que seremos felices, sino que podemos esforzarnos por alcanzar la felicidad. Que nadie puede dictar lo que decimos, hacemos o creemos para ser felices. La felicidad puede manifestarse de manera distinta para cada persona, pero como católicos sabemos - y siempre hemos sabido - que la felicidad no reside en esta tierra, sino en la promesa de la bienaventuranza eterna con Dios en el cielo. En lugar de buscar riquezas y posesiones, en este 4 de julio busquemos una relación más profunda con Dios, la cual, necesariamente, nos hará más felices de lo que jamás podríamos imaginar.
¡Feliz 250.º aniversario de Estados Unidos!
