Dear Parish family and friends,
As has been our great privilege for many years here at St. Francis Xavier, this year we will again have a transitional deacon, who will be serving here at the parish. This year, though he will only be here through December as the national program for forming men for priestly ordination has changed. Now, a deacon will generally serve the final six months serving full-time in a parish before priestly ordination. Here’s a brief biography that he wants to share with you:
Br. Kurt Kessler is Deacon of The Pittsburgh Oratory of St Philip Neri, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Oratory is a community of priests and brothers who live and pray together serving as chaplains to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon. Br. Kurt was recently ordained a Deacon last May at St Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh by Bishop William Waltersheid. Br. Kurt’s family is from Altoona, PA, but he grew up in Lancaster County where he attended Our Mother of Perpetual Help Grade School, Ephrata, and Lancaster Catholic High School. Sports and music are some of his greatest hobbies, with the winter sports of hockey and skiing being his favorite.
At the University of Pittsburgh he studied Philosophy, Psychology, and History. He is a proud alumni of the Pitt Newman Club and most specifically The Fratican, one of the Newman Club Men’s Houses. Additionally, he enjoys hiking the Appalachian Trail and studying the Civil War, especially the battlefield in Gettysburg. He is happy to be helping at St Francis Xavier Parish this semester.
Deacon Kurt’s first weekend with us will be September 12 and 13. Please join me in giving a warm welcome to him as he begins his diaconal ministry with us in preparation for ordination to the Priesthood.

Estimada familia y amigos de la parroquia,
Como ha sido un gran privilegio para nosotros durante muchos años aquí en San Francisco Javier, este año volveremos a contar con un diácono en transición que prestará servicio en nuestra parroquia. Sin embargo, este año solo estará con nosotros hasta diciembre, debido a cambios en el programa nacional de formación de hombres para la ordenación sacerdotal. Actualmente, por lo general, el diácono sirve a tiempo completo en una parroquia durante los últimos seis meses previos a su ordenación sacerdotal. A continuación, compartimos una breve biografía que él desea presentarles:
Hermano Kurt Kessler es diácono del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri de Pittsburgh, Pensilvania.
