Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,

So this is it, my dear friends, my last pastor's column for you. It has been a great unexpected joy to provide these short reflections on our faith, on our community challenges and celebrations, our growing together as a family, and harmonizing our vision, our mission, goals, and priorities as a Catholic Parish in the context of the greater community in which we live.

As I contemplate this short “farewell discourse,” I find myself slways coming back to a movie scene (ironic, after my last bulletin column, I know) where Q, the ever-creative quartermaster and gadget inventor for James Bond, in the last movie before the retirement and death of the original Q actor Desmond Llewellyn, said, “007, I've always tried to teach you two things: never let them see you bleed, and always have an escape plan,” as Q smoothly exited the scene. 

So I'll adapt that with a few things I've been trying to share during our time together. I would summarize them under the cardinal headings of faith, hope, love, and joy.

Faith is in our time reflecting on the treasury in God's Sacred Word and our Sacred Traditions, beautifully interconnected in deep meaningful ways.

Hope is in always trusting God with the forgiveness of our sins, in consoling us in times of grieving, in leading us in times of distress, and giving us the future in the children in our children formed in faith and relationship with God.

Love is in coming together as a parish family, across background, language, and cultural differences, willing to make sacrifices for the sake of love of each other and our unity, recognizing and valuing the different gifts we share.

Joy is in finding the adventure in the possibilities and opportunities of our parish, in celebrating our faith together, our family together, and the sure and certain hope of the future of our parish.

Estimadas familias y amigos de la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier: 

“La esperanza no defrauda, porque Dios ha infundido su amor en nuestros corazones por medio del Espíritu Santo que él mismo nos ha  dado”.

Así que, queridos amigos, esta es mi última columna de párroco. Ha sido una gran alegría inesperada compartir estas breves reflexiones sobre nuestra fe, sobre los desafíos y celebraciones de nuestra comunidad, sobre nuestro crecimiento como familia y sobre la armonización de nuestra visión, misión, objetivos y prioridades como parroquia católica en el contexto de la comunidad en la que vivimos.

Al contemplar este breve "discurso de despedida", siempre vuelvo a una escena de película (irónico, después de mi última columna, lo sé) donde Q, el siempre creativo contramaestre e inventor de artilugios para James Bond, en la última película antes de la jubilación y fallecimiento del actor original de Q, Desmond Llewellyn, dijo: "007, siempre he intentado enseñarte dos cosas: nunca dejes que te vean sangrar y ten siempre un plan de escape", mientras Q salía tranquilamente de la escena.

Así que lo adaptaré con algunas cosas que he intentado compartir durante nuestro tiempo juntos. Las resumiría bajo los títulos cardinales de fe, esperanza, amor y alegría.

La fe es, en nuestro tiempo, reflexionar sobre el tesoro de la Sagrada Palabra de Dios y nuestras Sagradas Tradiciones, bellamente interconectadas de maneras profundamente significativas. 

La esperanza reside en confiar siempre en Dios para el perdón de nuestros pecados, en consolarnos en momentos de duelo, en guiarnos en tiempos de angustia y en darnos el futuro en nuestros hijos, formados en la fe y en una relación con Dios.

El amor reside en unirnos como familia parroquial, superando las diferencias de origen, idioma y cultura, dispuestos a sacrificarnos por el amor mutuo y nuestra unidad, reconociendo y valorando los diferentes dones que compartimos.

La alegría reside en encontrar la aventura en las posibilidades y oportunidades de nuestra parroquia, en celebrar juntos nuestra fe, nuestra familia unida y la esperanza segura y certera del futuro de nuestra parroquia.
