Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,
“She is the book of the precepts of God, the law that endures forever; All who cling to her will live, but those will die who forsake her. Turn, O Jacob, and receive her: walk by her light toward splendor. Give not your glory to another, your privileges to an alien race. Blessed are we, O Israel; for what pleases God is known to us!”
This is not from one of our readings, but from the Old Testament prophet Baruch. It was in the Liturgy of the Hours last week and complements our first reading beautifully: “Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known in anticipation of their desire.”
There are two aspects of the Old Law that are difficult to disentangle. One is the law that is universal for all humanity for all time, the moral guidelines that perfect our human nature. The other is the law that was particular to the Israelites in their society: precepts of civil order, and even precepts of religious purity.
The grace and light of the Gospel have guided the Church in distinguishing between what laws remain eternally true and good, and what laws have passed away with the coming of the Law of the New Covenant in Christ. For example, Acts 15 shows the Spirit guiding the Church to not require circumcision, and Acts 10 shows Peter receiving from the Spirit that all animals are clean to be eaten. Both replace precepts of the Old Law. Of course, Jesus also tightened some laws: divorce is not part of the New Law; not just murder, but hatred in one’s heart is against the New Law. We follow the New Law given by Christ, but the Old Law gives us a trajectory of how to better understand and apply the divine wisdom of the New Law.
Like the people of Israel, the people of the Church are encouraged by the Spirit to see the unity between divine wisdom and divine law, and to see divine law not as a burden, but as a gift, “for what pleases God is known to us.” The heart of the Law is the wisdom to live out divine love, even in our fallen human nature.
