Overview of Theology of the Body | Visión general de la Teología del Cuerpo

Dear parish family and friends,

This coming Sunday at 2 pm, a special presentation for adults on the Theology of the Body will take place at the Xavier Center.  Parents with school age children are especially encouraged to attend. 

The "Theology of the Body" (TOB) is the title given to 129 talks delivered by Pope St. John Paul II between 1979 and 1984.  Succinctly, it’s a comprehensive and integrated teaching on the human person.  It provides a biblical reflection on what it means to be human, why we are created male and female, and how we are called to love.

Here are some important themes of TOB:

1)     The Body Reveals God: The central thesis is that "the body, and it alone, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine".  Our physical bodies are meant to tell a story about God’s own inner life – a communion of life-giving love.

2)     You Are Your Body: Catholic teaching rejects the idea that your body is just a "shell" for your soul.  You are a unified person – a living composite of body and soul.   Because of this, what you do with your body – how you treat it and others – matters deeply to your spiritual life.

3)     The Nuptial Meaning of the Body: God "inscribed" in our bodies the capacity to express love as a "sincere gift of self".  This isn't just about marriage; it’s a call for every person, whether married, single, or consecrated religious, to live a life of self-giving love.

4)     Created for Communion: We were created in the image and likeness of God, who is a trinity of persons.  Therefore, we find our deepest fulfillment when we live in communion with others, treating everyone with the dignity of a person made in God’s image and likeness, rather than as an object to be used.

Some people reduce TOB to "Catholic sex ed".  This is a very deficient and reductionist way of understanding it.  Rather, TOB is is a lens that helps us see the beauty in God's design for all of life, including how we understand the sacraments, the Church, and our ultimate destiny, which is the resurrection of our bodies in eternal union with God.

All of this matters so much, especially in our own time, because our culture is often confused about identity and relationships – seeing both the body and relationships in utilitarian ways (i.e. using them).  The Theology of the Body offers a path to freedom and joy by helping us rediscover our original dignity and purpose.  And it is the truth that sets us free.

Este próximo domingo, a las 2:00 p. m., se llevará a cabo  una presentación especial para adultos sobre la Teología del Cuerpo en el Centro Xavier. Se invita especialmente a asistir a los padres con hijos en edad escolar.

La “Teología del Cuerpo” (TDC) es el título que reciben las 129 charlas impartidas por el Papa San Juan Pablo II entre 1979 y 1984. En pocas palabras, se trata de una enseñanza integral y unificada sobre la persona humana. Ofrece una reflexión bíblica sobre lo que significa ser humano, el motivo por el cual fuimos creados como varón y mujer, y la manera en que estamos llamados a amar.

Estos son algunos de los temas fundamentales de la TDC: 

1) El cuerpo revela a Dios: La tesis central sostiene que “el cuerpo, y solo él, es capaz de hacer visible lo invisible: lo espiritual y lo divino”. Nuestros cuerpos físicos están destinados a narrar una historia sobre la propia vida íntima de Dios: una comunión de amor que da vida.

2 ) Tú eres tu cuerpo: La enseñanza católica rechaza la idea de que el cuerpo sea meramente un “caparazon” para el alma. Eres una persona unificada: una unidad viviente compuesta de cuerpo y alma. Por esto, lo que haces con tu cuerpo —la manera en que lo tratas a él y a los demás— tiene una profunda relevancia para tu vida espiritual.

3) El significado nupcial del cuerpo: Dios “inscribió” en nuestros cuerpos la capacidad de expresar el amor como una “entrega sincera de sí mismo”. Esto no se limita únicamente al matrimonio; es un llamado dirigido a toda persona —ya sea casada, soltera o consagrada a la vida religiosa— a vivir una existencia de amor entregado.

4) Creados para la comunión: Fuimos creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios, quien es una Trinidad de personas. Por ello, hallamos nuestra realización más profunda cuando vivimos en comunión con los demás, tratando a cada persona con la dignidad propia de quien ha sido hecho a imagen y semejanza de Dios, y no como un mero objeto de uso.

Algunas personas reducen la TDC a una mera “educación sexual católica”. Esta es una forma sumamente deficiente y reduccionista de comprenderla. Más bien, la Teología del Cuerpo es un lente que nos ayuda a ver la belleza en el designio de Dios para toda la vida, incluyendo el modo en que comprendemos los sacramentos, la Iglesia y nuestro destino último: la resurrección de nuestros cuerpos en unión eterna con Dios. 

Todo esto reviste una enorme importancia, especialmente en nuestros tiempos, pues nuestra cultura suele mostrarse confusa en lo referente a la identidad y las relaciones, concibiendo tanto el cuerpo como los vínculos humanos de un modo utilitarista (es decir, utilizándolos). La Teología del Cuerpo nos ofrece un camino hacia la libertad y la alegría, ayudándonos a redescubrir nuestra dignidad y nuestro propósito originales. Y es la verdad la que nos hace libres.

Happenings in the Parish | Acontecimientos en la parroquia

Dear parish family and friends,

Here’s the week at a glance – both last week, and the week to come.  At the Easter Vigil, we had 7 catechumens – 3 from the parish and 4 college students – baptized and initiated.  And this past Divine Mercy Sunday, we had 11 more people join the Catholic Church through the other sacraments of initiation – 4 from the parish and 7 college students.  And speaking of Divine Mercy Sunday, this past week we had over 100 people attend our bilingual Divine Mercy holy hour.  I was so amazed at how well attended it was!  And then this past Saturday, we had 43 children receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Communion for the first time.  What a beautiful spring week! 

And now this week, we celebrate Administrative Professionals Day.  I’d like to thank our church and school staff in a special way – and thank them again!  And when you see them this week, you can thank them again (and again) too.  I am grateful for all the hard work that they are doing.  I know I hit the ground running since I arrived here 10 months ago.  And, they have been running right along side me.  In a special way, the week before last, we said hello to our new parish manager, Gerald Michel.  It’s a significant learning curve, but he’s keeping pace, and is a great addition to our entire parish staff.

Also, coming soon to a parish near you… elections for the parish pastoral council and the school advisory board will be taking place.  I am so encouraged by the level of interest shown in both the number of candidates and the skill sets those people would provide to these very important committees!  Stay tuned. 

And speaking of very important, don’t forget to register by May 8 for the V.I.V. Dinner for our Very Important Volunteers on May 22 at 6:30 pm at the Xavier Center.  Basically, if you have volunteered in any capacity for St. Francis Xavier Parish (church or school) in any way over the past year, you and your immediate family are most welcome to register.  Just email or call the parish office to make your reservation.

Aquí tienen un resumen de la semana: tanto la que acaba de terminar como la que está por venir. Durante la Vigilia Pascual, tuvimos a 7 catecúmenos —3 de la parroquia y 4 estudiantes universitarios— que fueron bautizados e iniciados en la fe. Y este pasado Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, otras 11 personas se unieron a la Iglesia Católica a través de los demás sacramentos de iniciación: 4 de la parroquia y 7 estudiantes universitarios. Y hablando del Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, la semana pasada tuvimos a más de 100 personas asistiendo a nuestra Hora Santa bilingüe de la Divina Misericordia. ¡Me quedé asombrado de ver la gran asistencia que hubo! Y luego, este pasado sábado, 43 niños recibieron por primera vez el Cuerpo y la Sangre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo en la Sagrada Comunión. ¡Qué hermosa semana de primavera!

Y ahora, esta semana, celebramos el Día de los Profesionales Administrativos. Me gustaría agradecer de una manera especial a nuestro personal de la iglesia y de la escuela... ¡y darles las gracias una vez más! Y cuando los vean esta semana, ustedes también pueden darles las gracias de nuevo (y otra vez). Estoy muy agradecido por todo el arduo trabajo que están realizando. Sé que comencé a trabajar a toda máquina desde el momento en que llegué aquí, hace 10 meses. Y ellos han estado corriendo justo a mi lado. De manera especial, la semana antepasada, le dimos la bienvenida a nuestro nuevo administrador parroquial, Gerald Michel. Es una curva de aprendizaje significativa, pero él está siguiendo el ritmo y es una gran incorporación para todo nuestro equipo parroquial.

Además, muy pronto, en una parroquia cerca de usted... se llevarán a cabo las elecciones para el Consejo Pastoral Parroquial y para la Junta Asesora Escolar. ¡Me siento muy animado por el nivel de interés demostrado, tanto por el número de candidatos como por las habilidades y talentos que estas personas aportarían a estos comités tan importantes! Manténganse atentos.

Y hablando de cosas muy importantes: no olviden inscribirse antes del 8 de mayo para la Cena V.I.V. (Very Important Volunteers / Voluntarios Muy Importantes), que se celebrará el 22 de mayo a las 6:30 p. m. en el Centro Xavier. Básicamente, si usted ha sido voluntario en cualquier capacidad para la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier (ya sea en la iglesia o en la escuela) durante el último año, usted y su familia directa son más que bienvenidos a inscribirse. Parish Needs List Update | Actualización de la lista de necesidades parroquiales

Dear parish family and friends,

I pray you all had a beautiful Easter Sunday.  I enjoyed the time together with my family – although I was wiped out from the busyness of Holy Week!  I’d like to provide you with an update on our Parish Needs List.  Through the extraordinary generosity of our parishioners, as well as the PCCW, the school PTO, and the Knights of Columbus, we received $89,137 in donations.  In addition, we also received outright donations of items needed to complete various projects.  Please note that no additional parish funds were used to complete these needed projects, except those listed below with an asterisk (*).  As you can see, in a special way with the rectory, the exceptional generosity of our parishioners made all of those needed updates possible – for which, Fr. Pray and I remain truly grateful.  And we would like to host another open house to let everyone see the fruits of the more than 40 parishioners, whose hard work made all of that possible.  As of today, the projects that have been completed are listed below.  Further, there is still $37,960 available to complete more of the projects on the needs list, most of which has already been earmarked to complete designated projects.

Historic Church

Handicap entrance ramp installed to facilitate safer, easier access 

* Church HVAC system (including new boiler and pump) replaced (paid from our Historic Church fund)

Lighting in the church upgraded for a warmer, brighter feel

Gash in church interior door repaired (with brass fixtures to be polished)

* New votive candle banks and holy water dispenser installed

Parish chalice (donated from diocesan archives) refurbished and blessed for use during Mass

Xavier Center

Commercial vacuum purchased

Handrail to the Multipurpose Room stage installed

* Malfunctioning exterior and interior doors being repaired/replaced

* New holy water dispenser installed

New fryer, ice maker, popcorn machine, and kitchenware purchased

Parish Office

New sign to be installed in front of parish office (in process)

New table for Fireplace Room (meeting room) to be installed this month, with painting and remodeling to occur this summer

Rectory

Laminate flooring installed throughout

Insulation underneath the rectory addition installed for better efficiency

Rotted exterior utility door into garage replaced

New appliances, utilities, fixtures, and furnishings installed

Rectory interior repainted

Failed sump pump replaced

* Radon abatement in the basement completed

Cemetery

Entrance sign cleaned for greater visibility and welcome

Tombstones being cleaned to increase readability and enhance dignity of markers

New picnic table and benches outside the parish office to be donated this Spring

Lighting in the Multipurpose Room (which is failing) will be replaced this July

Church bathroom in the narthex to be renovated

Rezo para que todos hayan tenido un hermoso Domingo de Pascua. Disfruté del tiempo compartido con mi familia, ¡aunque terminé agotado debido a la intensa actividad de la Semana Santa! Me gustaría ponerlos al día sobre nuestra “Lista de Necesidades Parroquiales”. Gracias a la extraordinaria generosidad de nuestros feligreses, así como de la PCCW, la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTO) de la escuela y los Caballeros de Colón, recibimos un total de $89,137 en donaciones. Además, recibimos donaciones directas de artículos necesarios para completar diversos proyectos. Cabe destacar que no se utilizaron fondos parroquiales adicionales para llevar a cabo estos proyectos necesarios, a excepción de aquellos que se enumeran a continuación con un asterisco (*). Como pueden ver - y de manera muy especial en lo que se refiere a la casa parroquial - , la generosidad excepcional de nuestros feligreses hizo posible todas estas renovaciones necesarias; por ello, el Padre Pray y yo les estamos verdaderamente agradecidos. Asimismo, nos gustaría organizar otra jornada de puertas abiertas para que todos puedan ver los frutos del trabajo de los más de 40 feligreses, cuyo arduo esfuerzo hizo posible todo esto. A día de hoy, los proyectos que ya han sido completados se enumeran a continuación. Por otra parte, todavía disponemos de $37,960 para completar más proyectos de la lista de necesidades; la mayor parte de estos fondos ya ha sido asignada específicamente para la realización de proyectos concretos.

Iglesia Histórica

Se instaló una rampa de acceso para discapacitados para facilitar un acceso más seguro y sencillo.

* Se reemplazó el sistema de climatización de la iglesia (incluida una nueva caldera y bomba) (financiado con nuestro fondo para la Iglesia Histórica).

Se mejoró la iluminación de la iglesia para crear un ambiente más cálido y luminoso.

Se reparó una grieta en la puerta interior de la iglesia (se pulirán los herrajes de latón).

* Se instalaron nuevos portavelas y un dispensador de agua bendita.

El cáliz parroquial (donado por los archivos diocesanos) se restauró y bendijo para su uso durante la Misa.

Centro Xavier

Se compró una aspiradora industrial.

Se instaló una barandilla en el escenario de la Sala Multiusos.

Oficina Parroquial

Se instalará un nuevo letrero frente a la oficina parroquial (en proceso).

Se instalará una nueva mesa para la Sala de la Chimenea (sala de reuniones) este mes; la pintura y la remodelación se realizarán este verano.

Casa Parroquial

Se instaló piso laminado en toda la casa.

Se instaló aislamiento debajo de la chimenea. Se construyó una ampliación en la casa parroquial para mejorar su eficiencia.

Se reemplazó la puerta exterior de servicio del garaje, que estaba podrida.

Se instalaron electrodomésticos, servicios públicos, accesorios y mobiliario nuevos.

Se repintó el interior de la casa parroquial.

Se reemplazó la bomba de sumidero averiada.

* Se completó la eliminación de radón en el sótano.

Cementerio

Se limpió el letrero de entrada para mayor visibilidad y bienvenida.

Se limpiaron las lápidas para mejorar su legibilidad y realzar su dignidad.

Próximamente:

Se donarán una nueva mesa de picnic y bancos para el exterior de la oficina parroquial esta primavera.

Se reemplazará la iluminación de la sala de usos múltiples (que está fallando) este julio.

Se renovará el baño de la iglesia en el nártex.

Easter Message with Update | Mensaje de Pascua con actualización

Dear parish family and friends,

He is risen!  He is risen indeed!  A very happy and blessed Easter Sunday to you and all your loved ones.  May the joy of Jesus, who once was dead, but who now lives for ever, be in your hearts for the 50 days of this joyful season and beyond!  A special thank you for your prayers, your notes of encouragement and support, your goodies, and your thoughtfulness to Fr. Pray and I.  We are blessed to serve this parish family.

A very special thank you to Karen Szoke, Pam Doran, Nancy Newbold, and their team of helpers for decorating the church for Lent, Holy Week and Easter!  The beauty of these liturgical decorations really help us enter deeper into worship. A very special thank you also to Megan Cellucci and the volunteers who helped with spring cleaning the Historic Church in time for Holy Week and Easter!

Speaking of the Easter season, next Sunday the universal Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday.  Our risen Lord Jesus Himself appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun (1905-1938) and spoke to her about God’s Divine Mercy.  These apparitions (which are recorded in her diary, Divine Mercy in my Soul) led the Church to establish this feast of mercy as a very special day when “all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened” (Diary 699).  In order to help you celebrate this special day, a special time of Eucharistic Adoration will take place in the church on April 12 from 3 pm to 4 pm – the Hour of Mercy.  A special program of prayer (in English and Spanish) will take place then.  All are encouraged to attend.       

Since I’m covering a smattering of topics, how about an update on our Diocesan Annual Campaign?  As you may know, our parish assessment this year is $179,833.  So far, as of present, we have pledges and cash received amounting to $61,613.  This means we’re over 34% of the way to our goal.  Thank you very much for your continued generosity and support – I truly appreciate it all.  To easily make a secure gift online to the DAC, just go to our parish homepage and click on Give!

Finally, in this holy season, we confront the reality of death, which has ultimately lost its sting because Jesus has conquered the grave, and in Him death no longer has the last word over us.  As you consider your own mortality, Jesus’ Resurrection truly gives each of us profound hope.  But at the same time, it’s also prudent to steward our temporal resources for those who will inherit them.  One of the most loving things you can do for your family, then, is to make sure they are not left without guidance when you are no longer with them.  We spend our entire lives providing for the people we love.  A will is the final act of that provision.  And yet three out of four Americans have no will.  Many families in our own parish may be among them — not out of carelessness, but simply because life moves fast and this is easy to delay.  Don't delay any longer.  Our partnership with My Catholic Will changes that. ¡Él ha resucitado! ¡Verdaderamente ha resucitado! Les deseo un Domingo de Pascua muy feliz y bendecido a ustedes y a todos sus seres queridos. ¡Que la alegría de Jesús - quien estuvo muerto, pero que ahora vive para siempre - permanezca en sus corazones durante los 50 días de este tiempo gozoso y más allá! Un agradecimiento especial por sus oraciones, sus notas de aliento y apoyo, sus obsequios y sus atenciones hacia el Padre Pray y hacia mí. Nos sentimos bendecidos al servir a esta familia parroquial.

¡Un agradecimiento muy especial a Karen Szoke, Pam Doran, Nancy Newbold y a su equipo de colaboradores por decorar la iglesia para la Cuaresma, la Semana Santa y la Pascua! La belleza de estas decoraciones litúrgicas realmente nos ayuda a adentrarnos más profundamente en la adoración. ¡Un agradecimiento muy especial también a Megan Cellucci y a los voluntarios que ayudaron con la limpieza de primavera de la Iglesia Histórica, justo a tiempo para la Semana Santa y la Pascua!

Hablando del tiempo pascual, el próximo domingo la Iglesia universal celebra el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Nuestro Señor Jesús resucitado se apareció personalmente a Santa Faustina Kowalska —una monja polaca (1905-1938)— y le habló sobre la Divina Misericordia de Dios. Estas apariciones (las cuales están registradas en su diario, “La Divina Misericordia en mi alma”) llevaron a la Iglesia a establecer esta fiesta de la misericordia como un día muy especial en el que “se abren todas las compuertas divinas por las que fluyen las gracias” (Diario 699). Para ayudarles a celebrar este día especial, se llevará a cabo un tiempo especial de Adoración Eucarística en la iglesia el 12 de abril, de 3:00 p. m. a 4:00 p. m.: la Hora de la Misericordia. En ese horario se realizará un programa especial de oración (en inglés y español). Se invita cordialmente a todos a asistir.

Ya que estoy abordando una variedad de temas, ¿qué tal una actualización sobre nuestra Campaña Anual Diocesana? Como tal vez sepan, la cuota asignada a nuestra parroquia este año es de $179,833. Al reflexionar sobre su propia mortalidad, la Resurrección de Jesús ofrece verdaderamente a cada uno de nosotros una esperanza profunda. Pero, al mismo tiempo, también es prudente administrar nuestros recursos temporales en beneficio de aquellos que los heredarán. Por lo tanto, una de las acciones más amorosas que puede realizar por su familia es asegurarse de que no queden desamparados ni sin orientación una vez que usted ya no esté con ellos.

Pasamos toda nuestra vida proveyendo para las personas que amamos. Un testamento constituye el acto final de esa provisión. Y, sin embargo, tres de cada cuatro estadounidenses no tienen testamento. Follow-up to Parish Information Night on Financial Giving

Dear parish family and friends,

As your pastor, I care about the overall well-being of our wonderful parish.  But, in fact, our parish family is composed of lots of individual families.  And so, my concern is for the well-being of all of our families.  Of course, spiritual well-being is the utmost.  But it's also important to attend to the material well-being of our parishioners, too.  In this regard, I'd like to invite you to go to the homepage of our parish website at stfxcc.org, and listen to a very helpful presentation on stewardship that we held recently here at St. Francis.  In part, stewardship is about tools that can help you protect your assets and fulfill your legal obligations, while considering how doing so can also potentially benefit the mission of Christ here at St. Francis Xavier.

This presentation was recorded on March 19, 2026, where three speakers addressed parishioners at a special Financial Giving Information Night.  These are the presenters and their topics:

• First, Ralph Serpe, president and CEO of the Adams County Community Foundation, speaks on charitable strategies known as Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) — simple ways to use an IRA or 401(k) to your benefit and others.

• Then, Phil Dickerson, one of our very own parishioners, speaks on a great organization our parish has recently begun a partnership with, called MyCatholicWill.  It's an easy way for you to make a will absolutely free.  I've actually made my personal will through MyCatholicWill, and invite you to do the same.

• And finally, Jeff Hughes, a representative from RedefinED, speaks about an extremely easy way to use your state tax liability to financially benefit St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.  I've worked with RedefinED for years, and personally participate in this program, known as a Special Purpose Entity (SPE).  An SPE may sound too good to be true to some, but it’s absolutely not.  In fact, if all our parishioners who could, would participate in an SPE, the financial strain on our school would virtually disappear!

Update on Parish Council | Actualización sobre el Consejo Parroquial

Dear parish family and friends,

The Parish Pastoral Council is a body of elected and appointed parishioners, who, together with the pastor, facilitate the pastoral vision and mission of the parish. This year our Pastoral Council has taken on the important work of serving as liaisons between me, as pastor, and all of our parish ministries and organizations. As you know, in family life communication is so important. And we have a big family here at St. Francis! And so, all the parish groups have been categorized into 6 main mission areas according to the diocesan guiding document, “One Who Serves”. Those areas of mission are: Evangelization, Education, Pastoral Ministry, Liturgy, Social Concerns & Outreach, and Ecumenism & Interfaith Concerns. In turn, the Pastoral Council members have divvied up the groups in each area, and are reaching out to the leader or main contact each month for dialogue. The purpose of all this is three-fold: 1) To allow groups to share any needs, concerns, or suggestions they have; 2) To allow me to communicate information effectively to all parish groups; and 3) To encourage groups to continue reflecting on their work and ministry in light of our overall mission as a parish.

At this time, we’re beginning to prepare our annual budget for the fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30. As I was thinking about our parish groups, it got me reflecting on the financial considerations that some of them may have. Some of our groups fundraise or have other ways to support themselves. I learned in the seminary that “parish budgets speak your theology”. In other words, whether intended or not, whatever is financially supported is a pastoral priority in on way or another. And so, it is part of my vision that the parish budget would assist in supporting their work and ministry.

Having said the above, I’d like to invite any parish ministries and organizations looking for parish financial support to submit a simple budget of income and expenses for the next fiscal year to me by March 31. Doing so will not guarantee the funding requested. And, of course, it will all depend on the number of requests. But, in some way, this is meant to tangibly indicate that our whole parish is a shared ministry that we are co-responsible for.

Also, at this time we are inviting parishioners interested in serving on the Parish Pastoral Council (and also, the School Advisory Board) to self-nominate. El Consejo Pastoral Parroquial es un grupo compuesto por feligreses, tanto elegidos como designados, quienes —junto con el párroco— facilitan la visión y la misión pastoral de la parroquia. Este año, nuestro Consejo Pastoral ha asumido el importante labor de servir como enlace entre mi persona —como párroco— y todos los ministerios y organizaciones de nuestra parroquia. Como bien saben, en la vida familiar la comunicación es sumamente importante. ¡Y aquí en San Francisco tenemos una familia grande! Por ello, todos los grupos parroquiales han sido clasificados en seis áreas misionales principales, de acuerdo con el documento orientador diocesano titulado ”One Who Serves” (Aquel que sirve). Dichas áreas misionales son: Evangelización, Educación, Ministerio Pastoral, Liturgia, Asuntos Sociales y Extensión Comunitaria, y Ecumenismo y Asuntos Interreligiosos. Los miembros del Consejo Pastoral se han distribuido los grupos de cada área y se ponen en contacto mensualmente con el líder o contacto principal de cada uno para entablar un diálogo. El propósito de todo esto es triple: 1) Permitir que los grupos compartan cualquier necesidad, inquietud o sugerencia que tengan; 2) Permitirme comunicar información de manera eficaz a todos los grupos parroquiales; y 3) Alentar a los grupos a seguir reflexionando sobre su labor y ministerio a la luz de nuestra misión global como parroquia.

En este momento, estamos comenzando a preparar nuestro presupuesto anual para el año fiscal, el cual abarca desde el 1 de julio hasta el 30 de junio. Al reflexionar sobre nuestros grupos parroquiales, me puse a considerar los aspectos financieros que algunos de ellos podrían tener. Algunos de nuestros grupos realizan actividades de recaudación de fondos o cuentan con otros medios para autofinanciarse. Aprendí en el seminario que “los presupuestos parroquiales reflejan la teología de la comunidad”. En otras palabras, ya sea de manera intencionada o no, todo aquello que recibe apoyo financiero se convierte, de una forma u otra, en una prioridad pastoral. Entonces, forma parte de mi visión que el presupuesto parroquial contribuya a respaldar la labor y el ministerio de estos grupos.

Habiendo expuesto lo anterior, me gustaría invitar a todos aquellos ministerios y organizaciones parroquiales que requieran apoyo financiero de la parroquia a que me presenten, a más tardar el 31 de marzo, un presupuesto sencillo de ingresos y gastos para el próximo año fiscal. La presentación de dicho presupuesto no garantiza la obtención de los fondos solicitados. Y, por supuesto, la asignación final dependerá del número total de solicitudes recibidas. Sin embargo, de alguna manera, esto tiene el propósito de indicar de forma tangible que toda nuestra parroquia es un ministerio compartido del cual somos corresponsables.

Asimismo, en este momento estamos invitando a los feligreses interesados ​​en servir en el Consejo Pastoral Parroquial (y también en la Junta Asesora Escolar) a postularse voluntariamente. Parish Information Night on Financial Giving | Noche informativa parroquial sobre las contribuciones económicas

Do you have a 401(k) or IRA?  Do you have to make minimum distributions?  Do you currently have a will, or is it something you've been meaning to get to?  Do you have state income tax due and know how you can easily leverage it to help benefit school children? 

I’d like to invite you and all interested parishioners to join me for a Parish Information Night on Financial Giving on this Thursday, March 19, from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Xavier Center to learn about some exciting opportunities.

First, St. Francis Xavier Parish has recently partnered with MyCatholicWill — the only FREE Catholic service to help you and your family take care of the most important part of estate planning.  Come and learn about this totally free (and highly recommended) service.  If so inclined, you're even able to remember our parish in your plans.  

Also, there's a long-standing, simple program for individuals who owe Pennsylvania state income tax to direct those funds to benefit schools, such as St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.  Called a Special Personal Entity (SPE), these scholarship tax credits are a not-so-complicated, win-win way for you to help our children.  I have personally participated with an SPE for three years, and have found it a simple and rewarding way to support Catholic education. 

And finally, for those who have 401(k)s, IRAs, and the like, we'd like to share with you about two charitable strategies known as Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs).  Through these very easy processes, you’re able to make contributions from such accounts to our parish.  Some parishioners have found this an easy way to make their weekly offerings via one larger contribution.  Ralph Serpe, president and CEO of the Adams County Community Foundation, will present on this special topic.

Primero, la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier se ha asociado recientemente con MyCatholicWill, el único servicio católico GRATUITO para ayudarles a ustedes y a su familia a encargarse de la parte más importante de la planificación patrimonial. Vengan y conozcan este servicio totalmente gratuito (y muy recomendable). Si lo desean, incluso podrán incluir a nuestra parroquia en sus planes.

Además, existe un programa sencillo y de larga trayectoria para que las personas que adeudan impuestos estatales sobre la renta de Pensilvania dirijan esos fondos a escuelas, como la Escuela Católica St. Francis Xavier. He participado personalmente en una SPE durante tres años y me ha parecido una forma sencilla y gratificante de apoyar la educación católica.

Kicking Off the Diocesan Annual Campaign | Lanzamiento de la Campaña Anual Diocesana

Dear parish family and friends,

Please mark you calendars for Saturday, March 14.  At 10 am that day at the Xavier Center, we will have our parish Lenten penance service.  I would like to extend the invitation to all to come to the sacrament of mercy, that is Reconciliation.  Confession is such a gift in that the burden of sin, which sometimes we don’t even realize we’re carrying, is lifted, and the gift of God’s peace fills our hearts as we come to live from the truth of being, not merely sinners, but beloved sons and daughters of the Father.  What a beautiful way to prepare for Easter.

Also, this weekend we officially kick off the 2026 Diocesan Annual Campaign.  The DAC supports the ministries and programs of the Diocese of Harrisburg that are implemented at the parish level and supported by parishioners just like each of you.  The theme for the 2026 DAC is “Faithful Stewards”.  I have made my own pledge to this campaign, and have offered my support to Bishop Senior that St. Francis Xavier Parish will do all that we can to make our part of this campaign successful.  

Some of you know the true value of this campaign, and the many ministries it supports and lives it touches.  Thank you for your annual support of this campaign.  Some of you are newly- registered and are not familiar with the DAC.  Others of you may have personal reasons why you haven’t chosen to support this campaign.  And then still others may see it as just one more way you’re being invited to give.  I want to acknowledge and honor all the various ways you see the DAC.  

For me, I not only know how it directly serves our brothers and sisters in need, through various diocesan ministries, such as those directed by Catholic Charities, but I also know how much we as a parish ourselves benefit in an essential way from this campaign.  Did you know that we are one of the few centrally-administered dioceses in the country?  This means that the Diocese provides to our great benefit many needed daily services that we would struggle to provide on our own – from operations to IT support to payroll, not to mention extensive support in various aspects of pastoral ministry – from evangelization to youth ministry to spiritual growth.   

I’d like to invite those of you who have not supported the DAC before to consider making your first gift this year.  In your pews, you will find pledge cards to contribute via cash or check.  These cards also provide a QR code for you to make a secure gift on the Diocese of Harrisburg website.  Or, if you prefer, you can just click the Give! link on our parish homepage as well.  Your contributions will count toward our parish goal, which this year has increased a smidge to $179,833.  And again, I’m very proud to announce that we made our goal last year with a little room to spare, and that overage has come directly back to our parish.   

Thank you so much for your generous support of the 2026 DAC.  I truly appreciate it.

Por favor, anoten en sus calendarios el sábado 14 de marzo. Ese día, a las 10:00 a. m., en el Centro Xavier, tendremos nuestro servicio parroquial de penitencia cuaresmal. Quisiera extender la invitación a todos a acercarse al sacramento de la misericordia, la Reconciliación. La confesión es un don tan grande que nos libera del peso del pecado, que a veces ni siquiera nos damos cuenta de que llevamos, y el don de la paz de Dios llena nuestros corazones al vivir desde la verdad de ser, no solo pecadores, sino hijos e hijas amados del Padre. ¡Qué hermosa manera de prepararse para la Pascua!

Además, este fin de semana iniciamos oficialmente la Campaña Anual Diocesana 2026. La DAC apoya los ministerios y programas de la Diócesis de Harrisburg que se implementan a nivel parroquial y que cuentan con el apoyo de feligreses como cada uno de ustedes. El tema de la DAC 2026 es "Fieles Administradores". He hecho mi propio compromiso con esta campaña y he ofrecido mi apoyo al Obispo Senior para que la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier haga todo lo posible para que nuestra contribución sea exitosa.

Algunos de ustedes conocen el verdadero valor de esta campaña y los numerosos ministerios que apoya y las vidas que impacta. Gracias por su apoyo anual. Algunos de ustedes se han registrado recientemente y no conocen la DAC. Otros pueden tener razones personales por las que no han decidido apoyar esta campaña. Y otros pueden verlo como una forma más de invitarlos a donar. Quiero reconocer y honrar todas las diversas maneras en que ven la DAC.

En mi caso, no solo sé cómo sirve directamente a nuestros hermanos y hermanas necesitados, a través de diversos ministerios diocesanos, como los dirigidos por Caridades Católicas, sino que también sé cuánto nos beneficiamos, como parroquia, de esta campaña. ¿Sabían que somos una de las pocas diócesis con administración centralizada del país? Esto significa que la Diócesis nos brinda, para nuestro gran beneficio, muchos servicios diarios necesarios que sería difícil brindar por nuestra cuenta, desde operaciones hasta soporte informático y nómina, sin mencionar el amplio apoyo en diversos aspectos del ministerio pastoral, desde la evangelización hasta el pastoral juvenil y el crecimiento espiritual.

Me gustaría invitar a quienes no han apoyado al DAC antes a que consideren hacer su primera donación este año. Updates Around the Parish | Actualizaciones en la parroquia

Dear parish family and friends,

We are now diving deeper into Lent.  Remember that each day is a new day to begin again.

I want to give you some important updates about a variety of things:

First, I’m pleased to report that our HVAC system is now fully installed.  If you haven’t heard anything, that means it’s working correctly – the failing system was quite noisy, wasn’t it?  I’m grateful for the help of Jeff McCleaf, Bob Plank, and the Facilities Committee for helping make this possible.

Also, an update on the 2025 Diocesan Annual Campaign.  You all are simply amazing.  With a shortfall of $55,000 as we entered 2026, we were able to close the gap – not only meeting our parish goal of $163,754.66 for 2025 – but exceeding it by over $15,000!  I am so humbled and grateful for your generosity – truly.  And… as fate (or at least the calendar) would have it, the kickoff for the 2026 DAC will take place the weekend of March 8th. 😊

Speaking of feeling humble and grateful, that is exactly how Fr. Pray and I feel with all of the hard work done on refreshing the rectory.  What began as a quest just to repaint the walls and install new flooring ultimately became a renovation born of the generosity and labor of so many.  For nearly five weeks, over 40 parishioners came at various times to not only paint, but also to make repairs to walls and various fixtures, install new appliances and lighting, and make significant improvements to organization.  I am so grateful for the amazing efforts of Eileen Pabody, Kathy Reid, Jeff and Cindie Kane, Joe and Sharon Hall, Amy McVey, and SO many others from both the Anglo and Hispanic communities.  I jokingly told them that we could have our own HGTV series – “Rectory Renos”.  Later in the spring, there will be another open house, so you can come and see the fruits of their labor.

Also, this Friday, February 27, was Susan Thresher’s last day as our outgoing business manager.  I am grateful for Susan’s hard work these past several years here at St. Francis.  As the application period has now come to a close, we will soon have her successor hired.

And finally, an update on the Needs List, which listed various projects at the historic church, the Xavier Center, the parish office, the rectory, and the cemetery, in need of completion.  Of the 38 projects listed, 26 are already fully funded through your generosity, and 2 smaller diocesan savings accounts not being utilized.  In addition, several weeks ago, I already met with the Facilities Committee to begin talking about how we will complete those projects now in the months to come. 

There are so many wonderful things happening here at St. Francis Xavier!  Thank you.

Nos estamos adentrando en la Cuaresma. Recuerden que cada día es un nuevo comienzo.

Quiero compartirles algunas novedades importantes sobre diversos temas:

Primero, me complace informarles que nuestro sistema de climatización (HVAC) ya está completamente instalado. Si no han oído nada, significa que funciona correctamente; el sistema que fallaba era bastante ruidoso, ¿verdad? Agradezco la ayuda de Jeff McCleaf, Bob Plank y el Comité de Instalaciones por hacer esto posible. 

También les quiero informar sobre la Campaña Anual Diocesana 2025. Son todos increíbles. Con un déficit de $55,000 al comenzar 2026, logramos cerrar la brecha, no solo alcanzando nuestra meta parroquial de $163,754.66 para 2025, ¡sino superándola en más de $15,000! Me siento muy honrado y agradecido por su generosidad, de verdad. Y… como el destino (o al menos el calendario) quiso, el inicio del DAC 2026 será el fin de semana del 8 de marzo. 😊

Hablando de humildad y agradecimiento, así es exactamente como nos sentimos el Padre Pray y yo con todo el arduo trabajo realizado para renovar la rectoría. Lo que comenzó como una simple tarea de pintar las paredes e instalar pisos nuevos, finalmente se convirtió en una renovación fruto de la generosidad y el trabajo de muchos. Durante casi cinco semanas, más de 40 feligreses vinieron en diferentes momentos no solo para pintar, sino también para reparar paredes y diversos accesorios, instalar nuevos electrodomésticos e iluminación, y realizar mejoras significativas en la organización. Estoy muy agradecido por los increíbles esfuerzos de Eileen Pabody, Kathy Reid, Jeff y Cindie Kane, Joe y Sharon Hall, Amy McVey y tantos otros de las comunidades anglosajona e hispana. En broma, les dije que podríamos tener nuestra propia serie de HGTV: "Renovaciones de la Rectoria". Más adelante en la primavera, habrá otra jornada de puertas abiertas, para que puedan venir a ver el fruto de su labor.

Además, este viernes 27 de febrero fue el último día de Susan Thresher como nuestra gerente de negocios saliente. Agradezco el arduo trabajo de Susan durante los últimos años aquí en San Francisco. Como el período de solicitud ya finalizó, pronto contrataremos a su sucesor. 

Y, por último, una actualización sobre la Lista de Necesidades, que enumera varios proyectos en la iglesia histórica, el Centro Xavier, la oficina parroquial, la rectoría y el cementerio que necesitan completarse. De los 38 proyectos enumerados, 26 ya están completamente financiados gracias a su generosidad, y dos pequeñas cuentas de ahorro diocesanas no se están utilizando. Además, hace varias semanas me reuní con el Comité de Instalaciones para comenzar a hablar sobre cómo completaremos esos proyectos en los próximos meses.

During Lent, Prepare for Your Spiritual Rebirth | Durante la Cuaresma, Prepárate Para tu Renacimiento Espiritual

Dear parish family and friends,

We have now begun our annual pilgrimage of Lent, our spiritual preparation for Easter. It’s a time of focusing on why Easter was necessary in the first place. Of course, we know that sin separated mankind from God. It’s not that God distanced Himself from us – although that’s sometimes how we perceive it – but rather, that we have separated ourselves from Him. Since God is Love and the very foundation of Being (existence) itself, to be in a separated state from Him in sin, truly is the death He warned would happen to Adam and Eve. But, as Love, God comes to save us from our fallen selves. And in becoming one of us, it was now possible that the eternal God could live and die a human life. But being swallowed by death, Jesus could not be held bound. And in rising from the dead on Easter Sunday, He defeated sin and death. It’s only because of what Jesus did for us that we can truly be restored to a loving, life-giving relationship with the Father. And in baptism, what Jesus did once for all, personally becomes ours through faith, as we are sacramentally born again in Him – going down into the waters of the baptismal font, buried with Christ to the old life of sin – so that we could then be lifted up, beginning new life in Him, which will only come to fulfillment in heaven. What I just shared here is a summary of the Good News of the Gospel.

Part of the “bad news”, though, is that we are not yet in full possession of that new life, and we must continue our march toward the fullness of salvation in heaven. And even though through baptism we have become a new creation in Christ, our fallen human nature is still prone to sin. Satan takes advantage of this Achilles’ heel, seducing us with half-truths and lies. He tries to weaken our relationship with God through venial sin, and even more, to destroy it through mortal (grave) sin. Similar to the lie he told Adam and Eve, so does he try to seduce us with – that we are not children of God at all – that we have to provide for our own happiness and satisfaction, apart from a God we may not be able to trust. And while salvation can only ever be a gift we receive, through sin, we can ignore, make impotent, or destroy that gift.

Lent, then, is about intentionally entering into this life-long struggle, which is called the cross. Just as Jesus died on His cross for our sins so that we can live, so in our struggle against sin – our cross – does Jesus draw us closer to the Father – the font of life and love – so can we truly live. Not apart from God, but in union with Him. Not doing life on our own with a nod to God, but truly learning how to depend on Him, as a little child does with his or her father or mother.

Coming from an Old English word for spring, Lent speaks to the truth that just as the new life of spring comes after the death of winter (yay!), so does the Resurrection of Jesus bring new life out of death. Lent, then, is a time preparing us for spiritual rebirth – something once experienced in baptism – but something that constantly needs to be renewed – as we repent of sin so that we can live more and more unimpeded, growing in holiness and virtue as disciples of Jesus. May you have a fruitful Lent so as to have a joy-filled Easter.

Hemos comenzado nuestra peregrinación anual de Cuaresma, nuestra preparación espiritual para la Pascua. Es un tiempo para centrarnos primeramente en la necesidad de la Pascua. Claro que sabemos que el pecado separó a la humanidad de Dios. No es que Dios se distanciara de nosotros - aunque a veces así lo percibimos - sino que nosotros mismos nos hemos separado de Él. Dado que Dios es Amor y el fundamento mismo del Ser (la existencia), estar separados de Él en pecado es verdaderamente la muerte que Él advirtió que les sobrevendría a Adán y Eva. Pero, como Amor, Dios viene a salvarnos de nuestra caída. Y al hacerse uno de nosotros, ahora era posible que el Dios eterno pudiera vivir y morir como ser humano. Pero al ser absorbido por la muerte, Jesús no pudo ser atado. Y al resucitar de entre los muertos el Domingo de Pascua, venció al pecado y a la muerte. Solo por lo que Jesús hizo por nosotros podemos ser verdaderamente restaurados a una relación amorosa y vivificante con el Padre. Y en el bautismo, lo que Jesús hizo una vez para siempre, se hace nuestro personalmente por la fe, al nacer sacramentalmente de nuevo en Él - descendiendo a las aguas de la pila bautismal, sepultados con Cristo a la antigua vida de pecado - para luego ser elevados, comenzando una nueva vida en Él, que solo se cumplirá en el cielo. Lo que acabo de compartir aquí es un resumen de la Buena Noticias del Evangelio.

Parte de la "mala noticia", sin embargo, es que aún no estamos en plena posesión de esa nueva vida, y debemos continuar nuestra marcha hacia la plenitud de la salvación en el cielo. Y aunque por el bautismo nos hemos convertido en una nueva creación en Cristo, nuestra naturaleza humana caída aún es propensa al pecado. Satanás se aprovecha de este talón de Aquiles, seduciéndonos con medias verdades y mentiras. Intenta debilitar nuestra relación con Dios mediante el pecado venial, y aún más, destruirla mediante el pecado mortal (grave). Similar a la mentira que les dijo a Adán y Eva, también intenta seducirnos con la idea de que no somos hijos de Dios, que debemos procurar nuestra propia felicidad y satisfacción, separados de un Dios en quien quizá no podamos confiar. Y si bien la salvación solo puede ser un don que recibimos, a través del pecado podemos ignorarlo, invalidarlo o destruirlo.

La Cuaresma, entonces, consiste en entrar intencionalmente en esta lucha que dura toda la vida, llamada la cruz. Así como Jesús murió en su cruz por nuestros pecados para que pudiéramos vivir, así también en nuestra lucha contra el pecado - nuestra cruz - Jesús nos acerca al Padre - la fuente de vida y amor - para que podamos vivir verdaderamente. No separados de Dios, sino en unión con Él. No viviendo la vida solos con un guiño a Dios, sino aprendiendo verdaderamente a depender de Él, como un niño pequeño lo hace con su padre o madre.

Proveniente de una palabra inglesa antigua que significa primavera, la Cuaresma nos habla de la verdad de que, así como la nueva vida de la primavera llega tras la muerte del invierno (¡viva!), también la Resurrección de Jesús trae nueva vida de la muerte. La Cuaresma, entonces, es un tiempo que nos prepara para el renacimiento espiritual—algo que experimentamos en el bautismo—pero que necesita renovarse constantemente, a medida que nos arrepentimos del pecado para que podamos vivir cada vez más libres de obstáculos, creciendo en santidad y virtud como discípulos de Jesús. Que tengan una Cuaresma fructífera para que tengan una Pascua llena de alegría.

This Lent, Follow Jesus | Esta Cuaresma, sigue a Jesús

Dear parish family and friends,

This coming Wednesday, February 18, is Ash Wednesday – the beginning of Lent. Over the past several years, one of the most helpful daily Lenten practices for me has been the use of the #Pray40 Challenge through the free Hallow App. I would like to highly recommend this to you.

This year, entitled Pray40 – the Return, we will be invited to join in on a journey back home to the Lord – no matter our sins, no matter our struggles, no matter how far we’ve strayed away. Just as we’ll see through the Parable of the Prodigal Son, we’re all farther away from God than we need to be…but the good news is God is always waiting for us with open arms, running out to us while we are still a long way off.

To really help bring the truths of this parable to life this Lent in Pray40, we’ll dive into the incredible book, The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky, considered one of the greatest novels of all time.

Pray40 is routinely the largest and most popular prayer challenge Hallow offers. In 2025, nearly two-million people joined Pray40, and Hallow was blessed to reach #2 in the App Store, behind only ChatGPT!

El próximo miércoles 18 de febrero es Miércoles de Ceniza, el comienzo de la Cuaresma. Durante los últimos años, una de las prácticas cuaresmales diarias más útiles para mí ha sido el reto #Pray40 a través de la aplicación gratuita Hallow. Se lo recomiendo mucho.

Love is in the air. Of course, next Saturday is Valentine’s Day. While we celebrate romantic love and friendship in a special way on this day, remember how much God loves you personally. He has loved you from all eternity, just as you are. And because He loves you, He calls you to holiness and greatness. But He loves you just as you are now. Here is a special valentine from God to you (John 3:16) to help you delight in this everlasting truth:

Querida familia parroquial y amigos,

El amor está en el aire. Por supuesto, el próximo sábado es el Día del Amor de de la Amistad, también se conoce del Día de San Valentín. Si bien celebramos el amor romántico y la amistad de una manera especial en este día, recordemos cuánto nos ama Dios personalmente. Él nos ha amado desde toda la eternidad, tal como somos. Y porque nos ama, nos llama a la santidad y a la grandeza. Pero nos ama tal como somos ahora. Aquí les comparto un poema especial del P. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., que expresa este amor. Grateful for Blessings in Our Parish | Agradecido por las bendiciones en nuestra parroquia

Dear parish family and friends,

Gratitude is a most precious virtue.  And these days, I find myself grateful for so many blessings that God has bestowed through the hands of others.  Let me share with you three of them.

First, through your beautiful generosity, we have closed the $56,000 shortfall in the 2025 Diocesan Annual Campaign, and as of today have raised $168,333 toward our goal of $163,755 – a $4,500 overage, which will come back to our parish!  And because I believe in what this campaign supports, over the course of the next year, I will be sharing with you just how this diocesan appeal truly benefits us right here in Gettysburg in some ways that you might not have thought of, or that might even surprise you.  Thank you to all of those who have given!  I am grateful. 

Second, thank you for your support of our Parish Needs List.  Thanks to your generosity, many of the projects on our list have been fully or partially funded.  To date, cash donations total $52,400, not to mention other donations of materials and hard work.  This past week, I met with our Facilities Committee to begin planning how these projects will be carried out in the year to come. Also, forthcoming displays will show photos of the current state of those items in need of repair.  And down the road, we plan to include “after photos” to see the fruit of the work being done thanks to your generosity.  And speaking of the Facilities Committee, they tell me that the installation of our new heating and air-conditioning system at the historic church should be completed by the end of January.  I am grateful. 

Third, over the past 3 weeks, some 30 + parishioners have been rubbing shoulders (and paint brushes) at the rectory – tearing our old wall paper down, putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and installing new light fixtures, appliances, and curtains, among many other projects.  Fr. Pray and I totally feel like kids on Christmas morning with all the delightful surprises and blessings that we have humbly received through the efforts of so many.  And even though we get to enjoy the fruits of their labor, it was so good to see parishioners – Anglo and Hispanic, long-timers and newly-registered – getting to know one another in the process of all this work.  Oh, and we will have another open house down the road so you can see the amazing results.  We are grateful.

La gratitud es una virtud muy preciada. Y en estos días, me siento agradecido por tantas bendiciones que Dios nos ha concedido a través de las manos de otros. Permítanme compartir con ustedes tres de ellas.

Primero, gracias a su generosidad, hemos cubierto el déficit de $56,000 en la Campaña Anual Diocesana de 2025, y hasta el día de hoy hemos recaudado $168,333 para nuestra meta de $163,755, un excedente de $4,500 que regresará a nuestra parroquia. Y como creo en lo que apoya esta campaña, a lo largo del próximo año, les compartiré cómo esta colecta diocesana nos beneficia aquí mismo en Gettysburg de maneras que quizás no hayan considerado o que incluso les sorprendan. ¡Gracias a todos los que han contribuido! Estoy agradecido.

Segundo, gracias por su apoyo a nuestra Lista de Necesidades Parroquiales. Gracias a su generosidad, muchos de los proyectos de nuestra lista han sido financiados total o parcialmente. Estoy agradecido.

Tercero, durante las últimas 3 semanas, más de 30 feligreses han estado trabajando juntos (y con brochas de pintura) en la casa parroquial: quitando el papel tapiz viejo, pintando las paredes e instalando nuevas lámparas, electrodomésticos y cortinas, entre muchos otros proyectos. El Padre Pray y yo nos sentimos como niños en la mañana de Navidad con todas las maravillosas sorpresas y bendiciones que hemos recibido humildemente gracias al esfuerzo de tantos. Y aunque disfrutamos nosotros de los frutos de su trabajo, fue maravilloso ver a los feligreses – anglos e hispanos – conocerse entre sí durante todo este proceso. Ah, y organizaremos otra jornada de puertas abiertas más adelante para que puedan ver los increíbles resultados. Estamos muy agradecidos.

Believe God’s Truth About Us | Creemos en la verdad de Dios sobre nosotros.

Dear parish family and friends, 

Today, the universal Church celebrates the Sunday of the Word of God, established by Pope Francis as a day “devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God” – the Bible. The Word of God reveals the truth that sets us free – not just from sin and eternal separation from God – but also from the effects of original sin still plaguing us, such as the lies we believe about ourselves, which many times stretch back to childhood. A powerful way to experience God’s truth that sets us free is to come into agreement with who our heavenly Father says we are, as His beloved children. I invite you to pray these statements in faith:

- I am complete in Him, Who is the Head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10).

- I am alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:5).

- I am born of God, and the evil one does not touch me (1 John 5:18).

- I am holy and without blame before Him in love (Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:16).

- I have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

- I have the Greater One living in me. Greater is He Who is in me than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

- I have put off the old man and have put on the new man, which is renewed in the knowledge after the image of Him Who created me (Colossians 3:9-10).

- I have no lack, for my God supplies all of my need according to His riches in glory by Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

- I can do all things through Christ Jesus, who is my strength (Philippians 4:13).

- I am a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

- I am more than a conqueror through Him Who loves me (Romans 8:37).

- I am an overcomer by the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony (Revelation 12:11).

- It is not I who live, but Christ Who lives in me (Galatians 2:20).

- I am the temple of the Holy Spirit; I am not my own (1 Corinthians 6:19).

- I am delivered from the power of darkness and transferred into God’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13).

- I am greatly loved by God (Romans 1:7; Ephesians 2:4; Colossians 3:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4).

- I press on toward the goal to win the prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward (Philippians 3:14).

- For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

Also, this week is Catholic Schools Week. This annual celebration is an opportunity for Catholic schools across the country to proudly showcase our faith-based education and student success in academics, leadership, volunteerism, the arts, and athletics. In a world saturated with lies and half-truths, Catholic schools are a haven that proclaims the good news of God’s truth. We have an amazing Catholic school here at St. Francis Xavier. And I am so grateful for Mrs. Sieg and all of our teachers and staff for all their hard work to make our school the family it truly is. And in case you haven’t heard, our school is growing! Hoy, la Iglesia universal celebra el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios, establecido por el Papa Francisco como un día “dedicado a la celebración, el estudio y la difusión de la Palabra de Dios” -  la Biblia. La Palabra de Dios revela la verdad que nos libera - no solo del pecado y la separación eterna de Dios - sino también de los efectos del pecado original que aún nos afligen, como las mentiras que creemos sobre nosotros mismos, que muchas veces se remontan a la infancia. Una manera poderosa de experimentar la verdad de Dios que nos libera es aceptar lo que nuestro Padre celestial dice que somos, como sus hijos amados. Los invito a orar estas afirmaciones con fe:

- Soy completo en Él, que es la Cabeza de todo Principado y Potestad (Colosenses 2:10).

- Estoy vivo con Cristo (Efesios 2:5).

- He nacido de Dios, y el maligno no me toca (1 Juan 5:18).

- Soy santo e irreprensible delante de Él en amor (Efesios 1:4; 1 Pedro 1:16).

- Tengo la paz de Dios que sobrepasa todo entendimiento (Filipenses 4:7).

- El que es mayor vive en mí. Mayor es el que está en mí que el que está en el mundo (1 Juan 4:4).

- Me he despojado del viejo hombre y me he revestido del nuevo, el cual se renueva en el conocimiento conforme a la imagen del que me creó (Colosenses 3:9-10).

- No me falta nada, porque mi Dios suple todas mis necesidades conforme a sus riquezas en gloria por medio de Jesucristo (Filipenses 4:19)

En un mundo saturado de mentiras y medias verdades, las escuelas católicas son un refugio que proclama la buena noticia de la verdad de Dios. Tenemos una escuela católica maravillosa aquí en San Francisco Javier. Y estoy muy agradecido con la Sra. Sieg y con todos nuestros maestros y personal por su arduo trabajo para que nuestra escuela sea la verdadera familia que es. Looking Ahead at Sunday of the Word of God | De cara al Domingo de la Palabra de Dios

Next week we will be celebrating the Sunday of the Word of God. In his Apostolic Letter Aperuit illis issued on September 30, 2019, Pope Francis established that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to “celebration, study, and spreading of the Word of God.“ It is a day that invites Catholics across the world to deepen their appreciation, love, and faithful witness to God and his Word. This year, the Sunday of the Word of God falls on January 25.

According to Pope Francis, “There is one particular way of listening to what the Lord wishes to tell us in his word and of letting ourselves be transformed by the Spirit. We must listen to God’s word, and then, in the moments that follow, ask ‘Lord, what does this text say to me? What is it about my life that you want to change by this text? What troubles me about this text? Or perhaps: What do I find pleasant in this text? What is it about this word that moves me?’”

This year’s theme for the Sunday of the Word of God is “The word of Christ dwells among you.” The word “dwell” means to live or reside; it carries a suggestion of relationship rather than fleeting moments of encounter. It is a beautiful thing to hear the Word of God proclaimed at Mass, but do we revisit the Sunday Scriptures on our own time, allowing the Holy Spirit to use them to shape our lives? To know Christ, we must know His Word. If we consume the Word of God daily, we will find that it has the power to transform our lives.

The second part of this year’s theme is “among you.” When we find ourselves drawing peace, wisdom,\ and courage from the Word of God we will be able to share it with those we encounter every day. The better we know the Word of God, the better equipped we will be to reflect Christ to our brothers and sisters. We can pass along the comfort we have found and give a ready answer to the challenges that are sure to come.

Lent begins on February 18, and we all know that during Lent we are called to prayer, fasting, and abstinence. Perhaps this Lent we can find time outside of Mass to pray with the Scriptures. A good place to start with the Word of God is with the Sunday readings. Perhaps read them before attending Mass and then again after Mass considering what you have heard in the homily. Ascension Press has a wonderful resource called Sundays with Ascension with homilies and podcasts. Resources can also be found on the website of The United States Council of Catholic Bishops at usccb.org. Both resources will even have content sent directly to your email inbox. Whatever you choose to do, simply step forward in faith and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you and reveal to you the wonders of the Word of God.

La próxima semana celebraremos el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios. En su Carta Apostólica Aperuit illis, publicada el 30 de septiembre de 2019, el Papa Francisco estableció que el Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario se dedicará a la “celebración, el estudio y la difusión de la Palabra de Dios”. Es un día que invita a los católicos de todo el mundo a profundizar su aprecio, amor y testimonio fiel de Dios y su Palabra. Este año, el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios cae el 25 de enero.

Según el Papa Francisco, “Hay una manera particular de escuchar lo que el Señor desea decirnos en su palabra y de dejarnos transformar por el Espíritu. Debemos escuchar la palabra de Dios y luego, en los momentos siguientes, preguntarnos: ‘Señor, ¿qué me dice este texto? ¿Qué aspecto de mi vida quieres cambiar con este texto? ¿Qué me inquieta de este texto? O quizás: ¿Qué encuentro agradable en este texto? ¿Qué me conmueve de esta palabra?’”

El tema de este año para el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios es “La palabra de Cristo habita entre vosotros”. La palabra “habitar” significa vivir o residir; sugiere una relación en lugar de momentos fugaces de encuentro. Es hermoso escuchar la Palabra de Dios proclamada en la Misa, pero ¿revisamos las Escrituras dominicales en nuestro tiempo libre, permitiendo que el Espíritu Santo las use para moldear nuestras vidas? Para conocer a Cristo, debemos conocer su Palabra. Si consumimos la Palabra de Dios a diario, descubriremos que tiene el poder de transformar nuestras vidas.

La segunda parte del tema de este año es “entre nosotros”. Cuando encontramos paz, sabiduría y valentía en la Palabra de Dios, podremos compartirla con quienes encontramos cada día. Cuanto mejor conozcamos la Palabra de Dios, mejor preparados estaremos para reflejar a Cristo a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Podemos transmitir el consuelo que hemos encontrado y dar una respuesta oportuna a los desafíos que seguramente surgirán.

La Cuaresma comienza el 18 de febrero, y todos sabemos que durante la Cuaresma estamos llamados a la oración, el ayuno y la abstinencia. Quizás esta Cuaresma podamos encontrar tiempo fuera de la Misa para orar con las Escrituras. Un buen punto de partida para la Palabra de Dios son las lecturas dominicales. Quizás les convenga leerlas antes de asistir a misa y luego nuevamente después, reflexionando sobre lo que escucharon en la homilía. Ascension Press ofrece un excelente recurso llamado “Domingos con Ascension”, con homilías y podcasts. También pueden encontrar recursos en el sitio web de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos en usccb.org. Ambos recursos incluso les enviarán contenido directamente a su correo electrónico. Sea cual sea su elección, simplemente avancen con fe y permitan que el Espíritu Santo los guíe y les revele las maravillas de la Palabra de Dios.

Update on Diocesan Annual Campaign | Actualización sobre la Campaña Anual Diocesana

Dear parish family and friends, 

Last week at Masses, an update on the 2025 Diocesan Annual Campaign was shared. As you may know, our current goal for the current DAC is $163,755. To date, through your generosity\ and sacrificial giving, we have raised $107,863. This, in addition to your extraordinary giving for Bishop’s Challenge, known as the Forward in Faith Campaign, is astounding. However, we still need about $55,000 to reach our goal for the DAC by January 31st . If we do not, we will still need to cover this amount, which we are not in a financial position to do.

Currently, less than 10% of our parishioners have contributed toward the DAC this year. If the remaining households would each contribute $25, we would close this gap right away. Fr. Pray and I would humbly ask those of you who have not yet donated to prayerfully consider doing so before the end of this month.

At the same time, as an incentive for additional giving, a generous benefactor has offered to match donations between now and January 31st dollar for dollar up to $10,000. In order to make your donation by the end of the month, you can do so in one of two convenient ways. First, you can write a check payable to St. Francis Xavier Parish, or put cash in an envelope marked 2025 DAC, and just place it in the collection basket. Or, you can scan the QR code on the back of your pew (XC – in the lobby), which will take you to our parish giving page. Just click the “Give to the DAC” red button.

Having said all this, we are also mindful of our 2026 DAC, which will kick off as usual during Lent this year. The Diocesan Annual Campaign helps support so many valuable ministries of our Diocese, including our school, and provides services to us as a parish that we could otherwise just not provide ourselves. La semana pasada, durante las misas, se compartió una actualización sobre la Campaña Anual Diocesana de 2025. Como saben, nuestra meta actual para la Campaña Anual Diocesana es de $163,755. Hasta la fecha, gracias a su generosidad y donaciones, hemos recaudado $107,863. Esto, sumado a sus extraordinarias contribuciones para el Desafío del Obispo, conocido como la Campaña Adelante en la Fe, es asombroso. Blessings of Generosity and the Epiphany | Bendiciones de generosidad y la Epifanía

Happy New Year’s! May the peace, joy, and strength of our Lord Jesus Christ and the prayers of His holy mother be with you and your family all through this new year now here! Fr. Pray and I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you again for your generous financial contributions this past calendar year. Your stewardship and support of our parish enables us to continue being a spiritual home for so many to grow in our beautiful Catholic faith as we worship the one God, living and true. And speaking of thank-yous – thank you as well for all your goodies and other gifts of kindness that you have blessed us with. As a little joke, I like to call the rectory kitchen countertop the site of the “Reverse Santa Claus Effect” – Santa goes to everyone’s house to get lots of cookies. Well for priests, lots of cookies come to our house  

This weekend, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. In case you’re wondering, Epiphany means revelation or manifestation. It’s on today’s feast that we celebrate God revealing or manifesting Himself in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. In other words, God is revealed to His people and to the world through the following events: the Magi coming to bring the Christ- child gifts and to worship Him; the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, when the Holy Spirit descends upon Him and He is revealed as the Son of God; and the miracle at the wedding at Cana, when Jesus performs His first miracle in public, revealing to all His divinity. On this feast, historically (especially in years gone by), the priest would come to parishioners’ houses to bless them, writing a small blessing above the main door. While today in our setting this is a bit more challenging to accomplish in one day – especially at a parish as large as ours – we are making available to you cards with these “blessings” for you to take with you – one per home. Together as a family, simply offer the prayers on the back, and then place the card over the main door in your home. These cards can be found in the narthex of the church and the lobby of the Xavier Center.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Que la paz, la alegría y la fortaleza de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y las oraciones de su santa Madre los acompañen a ustedes y a sus familias durante este nuevo año. El Padre Pray y yo queremos aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecerles sinceramente sus generosas contribuciones económicas durante el año pasado. Su generosidad y apoyo a nuestra parroquia nos permiten seguir siendo un hogar espiritual para que muchos crezcan en nuestra hermosa fe católica, adorando al único Dios, vivo y verdadero. Y hablando de agradecimientos, gracias también por todas las delicias y demás muestras de cariño con las que nos han bendecido. En broma, me gusta llamar a la encimera de la cocina de la casa parroquial el lugar del "Efecto de  Papá Noel al reves": Papá Noel va a casa de todos a recoger muchas galletas. Bueno, en el caso de los sacerdotes, ¡muchas galletas llegan a nuestra casa! 😊

Este fin de semana celebramos la Epifanía del Señor. Por si se lo preguntan, Epifanía significa revelación o manifestación. En esta fiesta celebramos que Dios se revela o se manifiesta en la persona de su Hijo, Jesucristo. En otras palabras, Dios se revela a su pueblo y al mundo a través de los siguientes acontecimientos: la llegada de los Reyes Magos para ofrecerle regalos al Niño Jesús y adorarlo; el Bautismo de Jesús en el Jordán, cuando el Espíritu Santo desciende sobre Él y se revela como el Hijo de Dios; y el milagro en las bodas de Caná, cuando Jesús realiza su primer milagro en público, revelando a todos su divinidad. En esta fiesta, históricamente (sobre todo en años pasados), el sacerdote visitaba las casas de los feligreses para bendecirlas, escribiendo una pequeña bendición sobre la puerta principal. Si bien hoy en día esto es un poco más difícil de lograr en un solo día, especialmente en una parroquia tan grande como la nuestra, ponemos a su disposición tarjetas con estas "bendiciones" para que se las lleven, una por hogar. En familia, simplemente recen las oraciones que se encuentran al dorso y luego coloquen la tarjeta sobre la puerta principal de su casa. Estas tarjetas se encuentran en el vestíbulo de la iglesia y en la entrada del Centro Xavier.

The Holy Family and Mary Our Mother | La Sagrada Familia y María Nuestra Madre

Dear parish family and friends,

I pray that all of you had a very happy, healthy, and holy Christmas with your loved ones as we celebrated the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Similarly, on behalf of the entire parish staff, I also wish to all of you a joyous and peace-filled new year.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. I pray for all of you and your families. The dynamic of family life is often not an easy one, as our various personalities and temperaments can at times clash with one another. And yet the family, in the words of Pope John Paul II, is the “school of love”. As family, we learn how to put up with one another. We learn how to sacrifice for each other. And we learn how to love others and be loved by them in return. Sounds poetic, but we all know the struggle it is! The Holy Family not only shows us, then, that love is God’s purpose for family life, but also strengthens us by their prayers to do so in our very own families. And this includes our parish family :) 

In addition, this Thursday, the Church celebrates Mary under her most glorious title, Mother of God, a holy day of obligation. Here’s a little more on this feast: The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God is a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st which falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. The title “Mother of God” goes back to the third and fourth centuries, and the Greek term Theotokos (“The God-bearer”) was officially consecrated as Catholic doctrine at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, thus becoming the first Marian dogma. At the end of the Council of Ephesus, crowds of people marched through the streets shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!” This Catholic dogma is based on the doctrine of Incarnation, as expressed by St. Paul: “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). And in fact, Jesus is God, and as His mother, Mary truly is the Mother of God. What a wonderful way to begin a new year – thankful that in Christ, we not only have a Father in heaven, but his mother as our mother too!

Oro para que todos hayan tenido una Navidad muy feliz, saludable y santa junto a sus seres queridos, al celebrar el Nacimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. De igual manera, en nombre de todo el personal de la parroquia, les deseo a todos un año nuevo lleno de alegría y paz.

Hoy celebramos la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José. Oro por todos ustedes y sus familias. La dinámica de la vida familiar a menudo no es fácil, ya que nuestras diversas personalidades y temperamentos a veces pueden chocar entre sí. Y, sin embargo, la familia, en palabras del Papa Juan Pablo II, es la "escuela del amor". Como familia, aprendemos a tolerarnos mutuamente. Aprendemos a sacrificarnos unos por otros. Y aprendemos a amar a los demás y a ser amados por ellos a cambio. Suena poético, ¡pero todos sabemos lo difícil que es! La Sagrada Familia no solo nos muestra que el amor es el propósito de Dios para la vida familiar, sino que también nos fortalece con sus oraciones para que lo logremos en nuestras propias familias. Y esto incluye a nuestra familia parroquial.

Además, este jueves, la Iglesia celebra a María bajo su título más glorioso, Madre de Dios, un día de precepto. Aquí les comparto un poco más sobre esta fiesta: La Solemnidad de María, Santa Madre de Dios, es una celebración litúrgica que se observa el 1 de enero, exactamente una semana después de Navidad, al final de la octava de Navidad. El título de "Madre de Dios" se remonta a los siglos III y IV, y el término griego Theotokos ("Portadora de Dios") fue consagrado oficialmente como doctrina católica en el Concilio de Éfeso en el año 431 d. C., convirtiéndose así en el primer dogma mariano. Al final del Concilio de Éfeso, multitudes de personas marcharon por las calles gritando: "¡Alabada sea la Theotokos!". Este dogma católico se basa en la doctrina de la Encarnación, como lo expresa San Pablo: "Dios envió a su Hijo, nacido de mujer, nacido bajo la ley" (Gálatas 4:4). Y, de hecho, Jesús es Dios, y como su madre, María es verdaderamente la Madre de Dios. ¡Qué maravillosa manera de comenzar un nuevo año! Agradecidos de que en Cristo no solo tenemos un Padre en el cielo, sino también a su madre como nuestra madre.

Welcoming and Inviting Others to Mass | Dar la bienvenida e invitar a otros a la misa

Dear parish family and friends,

Christmas is coming! As we celebrate our Savior’s nativity this year, I’d like to ask us as a parish to take the following to heart. We all know that various visitors and guests will be joining us for our Christmas liturgies. Therefore, in light of the newborn Messiah, who in His mercy is always generous, compassionate, and understanding, let us treat our guests and visitors in a similar way. Let them have “our” usual pews. Go out of your way to welcome them to our parish. Realize that, just as Jesus met people where they were, and not where His grace would enable them to be, so do we need to try to approach others. This is one way we can make the love of Jesus tangible, so that our guests and visitors – really our brothers and sisters in Christ – will want to come back again. 

Speaking of guests… I’d like to invite you to reach out to someone and invite them back to Mass for Christmas. Maybe they’re someone you know who was raised Catholic, but no longer practices their faith. Perhaps it’s a family member, a friend, or a co-worker. Maybe it’s someone who used to come here, but then stopped after COVID. Don’t worry about being rejected. Even if they say no, most people will just take it as you being thoughtful enough to think of them and ask. It doesn’t need to be heavy-handed or complicated. Just a simple invitation.

How can you do this? Maybe start with sharing that person a favorite Christmas memory – perhaps something that has to do with coming to Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Maybe it’s a favorite Christmas carol that speaks to you about the deeper meaning of this holy season, and then you can share how coming to Mass is a special way for you to celebrate that meaning. Perhaps if you’re having a family gathering first, you can invite them along with you to church afterwards. Or, maybe it’s easier to write it in a Christmas card you’ll send someone. Of course, you can always use humor (if appropriate), and remind them that lightning won’t strike if they join you ;) Above all, the goal here is not to give any semblance of judging, but rather of true care and welcome, or even that they have a spiritual home here at St. Francis Xavier Parish. 

And so, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, a blessed Christmas season to all of you and your loved ones. May the Prince of Peace find an ever-greater welcome in your heart to fill you with an abundance of His grace, mercy, and peace, in a special way in the new year to come.

¡Se acerca la Navidad! Al celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador este año, me gustaría pedirles que, como parroquia, tengamos en cuenta lo siguiente. Todos sabemos que varios visitantes y amigos se unirán a nosotros en nuestras liturgias navideñas. Por lo tanto, a la luz del Mesías recién nacido, quien en su misericordia es siempre generoso, compasivo y comprensivo, tratemos a nuestros invitados y visitantes de manera similar. Dejemos que ocupen nuestros bancos habituales. Esforcémonos por darles la bienvenida a nuestra parroquia. Comprendamos que, así como Jesús se acercó a las personas tal como eran, y no como su gracia les permitiría ser, así también nosotros debemos intentar acercarnos a los demás. Esta es una manera en que podemos hacer tangible el amor de Jesús, para que nuestros invitados y visitantes, que en realidad son nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, deseen regresar.

Hablando de invitados... me gustaría invitarlos a que se acerquen a alguien y lo inviten a la Misa de Navidad. Quizás sea alguien que conocen que fue criado en la fe católica, pero que ya no la practica. Quizás sea un familiar, un amigo o un compañero de trabajo. Quizás sea alguien que solía venir aquí, pero que dejó de hacerlo después de la pandemia de COVID-19. No se preocupen por ser rechazados. Incluso si dicen que no, la mayoría de las personas simplemente lo tomarán como un gesto amable de su parte. No tiene que ser algo forzado ni complicado. Solo una simple invitación. 

¿Cómo pueden hacerlo? Quizás empiecen compartiendo con esa persona un recuerdo navideño favorito, tal vez algo relacionado con ir a Misa en Nochebuena o en la mañana de Navidad. Quizás sea un villancico favorito que les hable sobre el significado más profundo de esta santa temporada, y luego pueden compartir cómo ir a Misa es una manera especial para ustedes de celebrar ese significado. Quizás, si van a tener una reunión familiar primero, pueden invitarlos a la iglesia después. O quizás sea más fácil escribirlo en una tarjeta de Navidad que le envíen a alguien. Por supuesto, siempre pueden usar el humor (si es apropiado) y recordarles que no les caerá un rayo si se unen a ustedes. Sobre todo, el objetivo no es dar la impresión de que estan juzgando, sino de mostrar verdadero cariño y bienvenida, e incluso que encuentren un hogar espiritual aquí en la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier.

Y así, al celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, les deseo una bendita Navidad a todos ustedes y a sus seres queridos. Que el Príncipe de la Paz encuentre una bienvenida cada vez mayor en sus corazones para llenarlos con la abundancia de su gracia, misericordia y paz, de una manera especial en el nuevo año que comienza.

Reconcile with the Lord as you Prepare for His Arrival | Reconcíliate con el Señor mientras te preparas para su llegada

Dear parish family and friends,

As we come to the end of this year, I want to thank you – each and every one – for your financial support of St. Francis Xavier Parish. Whether it’s through ordinary giving (i.e., the weekly collection) or through extraordinary opportunities (i.e., the Diocesan Annual Campaign, the Forward in Faith Campaign) or both – THANK YOU!

As in any family, so with our parish family, there are always many expenses. One of these is the Diocesan Annual Campaign, which enables our Diocese to offer important ministries and services that each parish could just not provide on its own. This year’s goal for us is $163,755. To date, we have reached $103,190. This means we are only 63% of the way to the finish line. If this goal is not reached by January 31, 2026, we will be responsible for covering the shortfall from our operational funds, which are also currently in deficit. I would like to ask – especially the 90% of households who have not had the chance yet to give to the 2025 DAC – to please consider making a year-end gift. Big or small, every donation really does help. The easiest way to make your secure donation is via the “Give” link at the top of our parish homepage (www.stfxcc.org). Again, thank you for all your support!

Also, this coming Saturday, December 20 at 10 am at the Xavier Center, our Advent parish penance service takes place. This seasonal opportunity brings together many priests to hear your private Confession. As we know, Jesus was born in a stable. But do you know what’s in a stable – other than animals? Poop. A stable can be a smelly and yucky place. And because our souls become tarnished and dirtied by sin, they also need a regular cleaning out. Coming to Confession allows our savior to sweep clean the stable of our hearts, so that we can create a more worthy and welcome place for Him as we prepare to celebrate His birth.

From time to time, though, I get the question “Why do I have to go to Confession?” Why can’t I just confess my sins directly to God? Let’s ask the question this way: Is the person who confesses his or her sins to a priest any better off than someone who confesses directly to God? Yes. First, he or she seeks forgiveness the way Christ intended (see John 20:21-23). Second, by confessing to a priest, the person learns a lesson in humility, which is avoided when one confesses only through private prayer. Third, the person receives sacramental graces that someone who does not go to Confession does not receive; through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, sins are definitively forgiven, and graces to avoid future sin are obtained. Fourth, the person is assured that his or her sins are forgiven; he or she does not have to rely on a subjective “feeling.” Further, the person can obtain sound counsel or advice on avoiding sin in the future. And finally, the penitent experiences consolation on the level of the heart, knowing that he or she is loved perfectly by our heavenly Father, who brings healing to those wounds caused by sin. So, yes, it’s worth going to Confession! “Winter cleaning”, anyone?

So, come to know the tender heart of our heavenly Father for you as you are in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confessions are also offered here at St. Francis after all scheduled weekday Masses, and on Saturdays after the 4 pm Vigil Mass. Also, there’s a helpful Confession guide on our homepage, which is also available on the doors of the confessionals in the church.

Al llegar al final de este año, quiero agradecerles a todos y cada uno de ustedes por su apoyo financiero a la Parroquia de San Francisco Javier. Además, este próximo sábado 20 de diciembre a las 10 a. m. en el Centro Xavier, se llevará a cabo nuestro servicio penitencial parroquial de Adviento. Esta oportunidad de la temporada reúne a muchos sacerdotes para escuchar su Confesión privada. Como sabemos, Jesús nació en un establo. Pero, ¿saben qué hay en un establo, además de animales? Excremento. Un establo puede ser un lugar maloliente y desagradable. Y debido a que nuestras almas se manchan y ensucian con el pecado, también necesitan una limpieza regular. Acudir a la Confesión permite a nuestro salvador limpiar el establo de nuestros corazones, para que podamos crear un lugar más digno y acogedor para Él mientras nos preparamos para celebrar su nacimiento.

De vez en cuando, sin embargo, me preguntan: "¿Por qué tengo que ir a Confesión?" ¿Por qué no puedo simplemente confesar mis pecados directamente a Dios? Planteemos la pregunta de esta manera: ¿Está mejor la persona que confiesa sus pecados a un sacerdote que la que los confiesa directamente a Dios? Sí. Primero, busca el perdón de la manera en que Cristo lo dispuso (véase Juan 20:21-23). ​​Segundo, al confesarse con un sacerdote, aprende una lección de humildad, que se evita cuando uno se confiesa solo a través de la oración privada.
