Growing Deeper in Faith Brings Greater Clarity | Profundizar en la fe aporta mayor claridad

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,

“Then Jesus said, ‘I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.’” 

One of my favorite phrases in the Gospels is “I believe, help my unbelief.” I struggled with this phrase for a long time because it didn’t make sense to me. How can you say you have belief, then you say you don’t? But as I grew in faith, this made a lot more sense. 

When we’re superficial in our faith, we don’t see a lot of distance between us and God. But when we start making more spiritual progress, we see better that there’s a bit more road than we thought. It’s like we took 2 steps toward God, and God is 10 steps farther than we thought. And so, as we continue growing in faith, praying with more devotion and regularity, participating in the Mass and receiving the eucharist with more reverence, we see that we’ve made 5 more steps toward God, and we see that the road to unity with God is another 10 steps farther than we thought. 

And this continues as we continue to grow deeper in faith, deeper in our spiritual devotion, deeper in our love and desire for God. As we contemplate this, we realize that God hasn’t moved or changed, but he is healing our eyes to more clearly see the distance between our spiritual position and his absolute perfection, our goal, and our heart’s deepest desire. We are definitely further along the journey than we were when we began, but we see with greater clarity as his divine light shines on road of the progress we still need to make. Not because he wants to show us how terrible we are, but because he wants to show us more clearly what we need to have healed in us so that we can have that unity with him we desire, and he desires infinitely more.

When we began, and boasted how close we were, we displayed our ignorance. But now that we can see, we are more humbly aware of how much we must yet progress. As we grow in belief, and see the immense distance we have yet to go to our spiritual goal, we can pray more humbly, “I believe, help my unbelief.”

Estimadas familias y amigos de la parroquia San Francisco Xavier, 

“Entonces Jesús dijo: “yo he venido a este mundo para que se definan los campos, para que los ciegos vean, y los que ven se queden ciegos”.

Una de mis frases favoritas de los evangelios es “Creo, ¡pero ayuda mi poca fe!”. Luché con esta frase durante mucho tiempo porque no tenía sentido para mí. ¿Cómo puedes decir que tienes fe y luego decir que, no? Pero a medida que crecí en la fe, esto tuvo mucho más sentido.

Cuando somos superficiales en nuestra fe, no vemos mucha distancia entre nosotros y Dios. Pero cuando comenzamos a hacer más progreso espiritual, vemos mejor que hay un poco más de camino de lo que pensábamos. Es como si hubiéramos dado 2 pasos hacia Dios, y Dios está 10 pasos más lejos de lo que pensábamos. Y así, a medida que seguimos creciendo en fe, orando con más devoción y regularidad, participando en la Misa y recibiendo la eucaristía con más reverencia, vemos que hemos dado 5 pasos más hacia Dios, y vemos que el camino hacia la unidad con Dios está otros 10 pasos más lejos de lo que pensábamos.

Y esto continúa a medida que continuamos creciendo más profundamente en la fe, más profundamente en nuestra devoción espiritual, más profundo en nuestro amor y deseo por Dios. Al contemplar esto, nos damos cuenta de que Dios no se ha movido ni cambiado, pero está sanando nuestros ojos para ver más claramente la distancia entre nuestra posición espiritual y su perfección absoluta, nuestra meta y el deseo más profundo de nuestro corazón. Definitivamente estamos avanzado más en el camino que cuando lo comenzamos, pero vemos con mayor claridad cómo su luz divina brilla en el camino del progreso que aún nos falta por hacer. No porque quiera mostrarnos lo terribles que somos, sino porque quiere mostrarnos más claramente lo que necesitamos sanar en nosotros para que podamos tener esa unidad con él que deseamos, y él desea infinitamente más.

Cuando empezamos y nos jactamos de lo cerca que estábamos, demostramos nuestra ignorancia. Pero ahora que podemos ver, somos más humildemente conscientes de cuánto nos queda por progresar. A medida que crecemos en la fe y vemos la inmensa distancia que aún nos queda por recorrer hacia nuestra meta espiritual, podemos orar con más humildad: “Creo, ¡pero ayuda mi poca fe!”
